Tesco encouraging Plastic Fraud?

  • Yes they have CCTV, if a Muslim lady (or rather somebody who isn't a Muslim lady, but is dressed in the outfit one wheres) how do you trace them?

At the end of the day it doesn't worry me, if the system gets used fraudulently without a PIN or signature then Tesco are liable (not sure but I think they are liable for fraud if they take a signature now too)
If you don't like what I say slap me around with a large trout and PM me to tell me why.

If you do like it please hit the thanks button.
  • Apparently Tesco are going to address this at their self-service checkouts, but I've not heard any mention of them doing anything about exactly the same issue at their self-service petrol pumps...

I hope they don't change the current system as I find it very useful to pass a credit card to my son to fill up his car from time to time but don't want to give him the PIN number. As all number plates are stored before petrol is dispensed I think that Tesco might consider that the risk is fairly minimal in comparison to the cost of upgrading all their petrol pumps. And as someone else has said they are the ones taking the risk.
Proud to be dealing with my debts
  • It's always fun to knock our favourite and most successful supermarket - even when it is old news.

    :)

Guess you shop at Tesco Gorgeous George!? Who's card do you use in there?

Tesco must have saved a fortune installing half finished self service tills in their stores. Every little helps.

I really am struggling to see the issue here, and Gorgeous is correct that it's very old news (I can recall using self service petrol pumps at Tesco 4 years ago and it dispensing up to £50's worth of fuel without any ID necessary).

As others have said, the whole point is that if there is fraudulent activity, then under the C+P rules Tesco are liable. They obviously took the business decision that the loss they'd make due to fraud during the period before they installed C+P was less than the costs of speeding up the programme to do the installation. Love Tesco or loathe them (and I shop at various stores, Tesco being one of them), I think the one thing that anyone isn't in a position to do is to lecture them about their business economics...

There could be a legimate issue to raise that the victims of the fraud (ie those who've lost/had their card cloned) have the hassle of reporting it. However, (a) if you're checking your statements you'll soon know about it and the fraud's unlikely to be restricted to Tescos and (b) I believe that because C+P hasn't been used, the burden of proof will be on Tesco to prove that the transaction wasn't fraudulent, so you wouldn't get much pushback from your bank.

If we are to castigate Tesco, then perhaps we should start a roll call of every other business that takes cards without a verifying pin....M6 Toll for a start.
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...

Agree. Also people who dont want to be clearly identified by CCTV use other methods. Also do any of us believe that having your photo handed to police is very likely to get you caught?I expect people who do this travel across the country doing it.

I really ike these tesco checkouts as I do not want to enter my pin/ If someone overlloks my card details and me entering the pin AND then commit the fraud then I will find it difficult to convince banks it wasn't me. Hoowever if someone just clones my card and doesit without pin I will get my money back and that's all that matters.

Vue cinemas do this too - on their ticket machines. no pin number needed

and it was the same today when i paid at a NCP car park
  • Hmm it's a tricky one. I love the pay at pump function in tesco petrol stations so I don't have to wait for the person in front who seems to go in the garage shop to do their weekly shopping... Pin pad would be a good idea though for security.
