Tesco encouraging Plastic Fraud?

I am stunned.

Just went into my local Tesco to buy a bottle & used one of the self service tills. A lady had to assist me as the bottle was Security tagged & needed removing. Suppose they also have to check I am over 18. I enquired as to where to put my card as the machine in ASDA has chip & pin.

To my horror all I had to do was swipe my card & take my receipt. No pin no signature no nothing. When I pointed this out to the lady she said it was a problem that Tesco were addressing. Whatever. No wonder their profit are thru the roof. Anyone can go in there with anyone elses card & buy what they like.

I have heard there is uproar over this. I use the ones in asda and they at least require a signature. Can see devious families posting each others cards round the country for no good.
  • Apparently Tesco are going to address this at their self-service checkouts, but I've not heard any mention of them doing anything about exactly the same issue at their self-service petrol pumps...

At the end of the day they are taking on the risk themselves. If there is a fraudulant use of a card then they are the ones that are out of pocket rather than the bank as the pin hasnt been varified.

It was in the press previously and from a customers perspective it really isnt much of an issue in my opinion. If someone wants to defraud you then they will... would have thought the majority of fraudsters will probably be considering something a little bit more extravigant then getting their pint of milk and loaf of bread

There was a long item about this on "You & Yours" on Radio Four this lunchtime. (Worth a listen on the "Listen Again" site) I think I heard that Which had highlighted the problem recently.

The radio item said that Tesco had responded to the concerns expressed by stating that it was a shame that Which had brought this up and scared customers unnecessarily!!!

The gentleman in the item stated that his card had been stolen and had been used over and over again at the same stores on the self service counters.

Tesco stated that it was no more likely for the Self Service tills to be used fraudaulently than at the normal tills.

  • It's always fun to knock our favourite and most successful supermarket - even when it is old news.

Wow, that's madness!! Tesco are 'addressing' it? They should have thought of that, before!!

one person had been defrauded of £1200 apparently.
  • Tesco do have CCTV that stores a photo of the person with each transaction. If the card was being fraudulantly the photo gets sent to the police.

If I was planning on using a card fraudulantly, this would be the last place I would think of doing it!
