root canal treatment - NHS and private costs & pros and cons

Hi oggy!
There's quite a good fact sheet on BUPA about RCT
http://hcd2.bupa.co.uk/fact_sheets/html/root_canal_therapy.html
http://www.dentalhealth.org.uk/faqs/leafletdetail.php?LeafletID=35
This is the British Dental Health Foundations information too.
Also discuss the pro's and cons with your dentist, possibly will need a crown in the future providing the RCT settles the problem down.
...Linda xxIt's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.0 -
Oh Olympika, I do so feel for you. It is so wearing with constant toothache isnt it. May be they will take it out and at least the ache will be over and you wont feel so kernackered at the wedding. Good luck xx
oggy - 20 minutes doesnt sound very long for an RCT? Perhaps they are just going to have a further examination or they will do a temp filling. It really isnt as awful as you imagine. Its just your mouth aches being open for so longDont worry about it - if the tooth is saved you will not need the crown at the moment. What will probably happen though is that the tooth will become discoloured over time after the nerve is killed and then you will want to crown it for cosmetic reasons.
But Im not the expert here (apart from having about 10 RCT!) Im sure one of the pros will reassure you0 -
Sorry Oggy, but it also sounds incredibly cheap!! I would definitely question exactly what they intend to do and how much for each stage. There is no way you could have a proper RCT done in 20 mins for £44!!0

Some basics
Antibiotics rarely work on localized dental infections. They should only be prescribed if the the patient is unwell or the swelling is causing a severe reaction affecting the airway.
For patients with pain the most appropriate treatment is to remove the cause of the infection either start root treatment or remove the tooth.
It is possible to root fill a front tooth in 2 20 minute appointments if the dentists has all the specialist equipment available and does the procedure all day everyday.
Remember Rubber Dam is essential if its not being used ask why not0 -
Sorry,i didn't know that.Having just paid a fortune going private and STILL ending up having the wretched tooth out,i suppose i was just jealous!!!
Oh if only there were more NHS dentists..............no disrespect to all you private ones, you do a great job,and i know the reasons why you go private, but the cost...............ouch!!0 -

Totally with you on that!
I spoke to the dentist this morning and as it was still getting worse on the antibios he wants it out asap. I am going in in about an hour. Gutted that I have to admit defeat and pretty nervous, but this is really the only option left now. Financially I can't afford to re-try the RCT, plus it almost certainly wouldn't work anyway so out it's coming. I also mentioned I have twice had dry socket (wisdom teeth) which I am absolutely desperate to avoid, so he's going to put a dressing in it afterwards.0 -
Hiya.I was wondering how you were getting on.It does feel like defeat but a week on from having mine out i just wish i had done it sooner. You will not regret it.Why hang on,it will only reoccur even if you were to get it cleared up now.So i know you will be feeling pretty rough at the moment but hopefully it will be a lot more comfortable by the wedding,is it this weekend?
Let me know how you are ,won't you?0 -
Hi This is just a thankyou for all the people that replied to my thread here. Well I have been and had my first lot of treatment of root canal and all I can say I dont know what I was worrying about everyone it was a breeze. The worst bit was the injection. The Anasetic is just wearing off and no pain either
So for all you people out there waiting for their first one to be done it is a breeze.
