the electricity costs for PCs, TVs, laptops please.

There is a thread over on Old Style about the cost of running things around the home, can someone clarify the cost of running a table top PC, laptop and TV please, both running and on standby mode - I need some ammunition to tackle my wasteful family
If I screw my eyes up tight I can just about see where you're coming from

    Something here, Tom and Barbara.........http://www.ukpower.co.uk/running-costs-elec.asp

...............but you need wattages of the appliance. Slow cookers are cheap because of their low power so can cook a dinner on E.7 for twopence. Microwave , tho more wattage are only on for up to 20/30 mins.
Contrast that with an oven on for several hours and hobs where you have to heat the pan before you heat the contents.
Flat screen new type comp monitors are cheaper to run than ye olde cathrode ray sort.

With a PC it will depend on the power of it & what sort of screen. My PC consumes 170watts with the screen on, 120watts with it off. The TV takes about 3 watts in standby mode (remember a lightbulb is 40/60 watts) and about 140 watts when switched on. The laptop was only using about 30watts, depending on what it was doing - fans & drives starting/stopping influences the figures.

I invested £30 in a power meter from Maplins to get these figures - it's now doing the rounds of the neighbours' houses!! This tool gives you the kWh figure for each appliance (we've stopped using the dryer except in emergencies & on E7!!!).

To get rough cost figures, 1 unit of electricity is the cost of running a 1kW appliance for 1 hour, so a 200watt appliance can run for 5 hours for 1 unit of electricity, a 50watt appliance can run for 20 hours for 1 unit.

Hope this makes a bit of sense!
