Belly Button Piercing and pregnant

Options
I had my 20 week scan yesterday and the nurse told me to remove my belly button piercing. She said I could get a plastic one instead.

Does anyone know what is best to do as I have read that the hole can heal wrong if you just take it out and difficult if you want to repierce.

thanks

Louise

You can get one made of some sort of sterile plastic - apparently the metal ones might grow out when your bump expands. I had mine pierced just before I found out I was PG and found out about it - I decided to remove it though based on the fact that it hadn't yet healed so didn't think it would heal easily while my bump was growing!!

I think at 20 weeks you should be fine to wait while you get a replacement one, then swap them over.

My friend used a plastic one until just before the birth when it got too small - she took it out and waited for a bigger sized one to arrive but a few days later it had healed - so recommend getting a bigger sized one as well just in case you need to change it.
  • Hi

Is it a recent piercing? if not I just took my piercing out both times when pregnant with my 2 and then popped in back in again (didn't have any problems)

On my last pregnancy the midwife told me to take it out when i was about 36 weeks, she never said anything to me before then.

You need something like this - http://www.bodyjewelleryshop.com/online_store/black_bioplast_bananabell_blue_jewel_14046789.cfm (not a recommendation for this shop, just one I found on google.)
They are a flexible plastic bar. Sometimes called PTFE or Bio compatible belly bars.

Ive always used The Body Jewellery Shop for my accessories (though I've taken out a lot of piercings now :( ) They sell quite a good range of the plastic 'bio flex' bars for pregnancy, one here:

have a look around the site, they do sell some nice things.

Beat me to it hehe. If you do a search for 'pregnancy' on that site it brings up quite a few. I highly recommend them.

I'm 36 weeks pregnant and still have my navel piercing in.

I bought a pack of 10 PTFE ones from ebay (only £7 for 10 and free postage), which can be sterilised by boiling them, and the stem on them can be cut to size, so you can put a longer one through as you get stretched!!

I'm on my 5th one now, so the pack of 10 was definitely a good idea!

I'll put the metal one back in once baby is born!

(once you've cut them, use a metal ball to make the screw thread, as it's MUCH easier!)
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

    thanks for all your replies.

i have had my piercing for about 10 years now so it wouldnt heal too well and apart from which i didnt want to lose it if i didnt have to. I will have alook at the sites suggested, i understand why it needs to be flexbile, i was think that the hole diameter got wider not the whole itself got longer but that makes sense now.

    Great stuff

I took mine out when I found out I was pregnant with my DD and after I had her I could easily just pop a new bar in if I wanted, have occassionally. Mine hasn't ever closed up, everyone is different though.
