As others have implied then, I suggest you make a tour of your local banks and pick two with which to open current accounts with.

Use one as your main current account, and the other as a backup should your relationship with the first become like your current relationship with A&L/Santander and you don't have to do what you have to do now in trying to open accounts when you're already sick of them.

(As an example I have pay and bills with LTSB, and weekly going out money with Nationwide, to ensure both accounts are used regularly. )

Someone upthread mentioned Natwest - make sure if you choose them that the branch you join isn't one of those that will be moved over to Santander (ones in Scotland,) and don't pick RBS if you're in England/Wales, for exactly the same reason.

This is due to authorisations. It's nothing unusual.

I would find it highly unusual if it happened with any regularity on any of my (non-Santander) accounts.

lol I don't doubt Santander have an added layer of crappiness ;) But *generally* speaking, an authorization hold is what it is when money vanishes/reappears without a trace in your current account.

I went online and checked my balance, when I noticed my ISA had less than it should have. I went to the bank that lunch time - they looked into it and then the manager came down - he said that a trainee cashier had put my sort code in the computer against a withdrawal.

The other persons' account number was the same as mine but not the sort code. They said they would correct it immediately but three days later had to go back and ask them to do it.

Two lunch times wasted - not my fault
