School dress-up,book day,nursery rhymes theme ,ideas ?

It's book day tommorrow and my little boys school has chosen nursery rhymes as a theme.Personally I think there a bit old for nursery rhymes. My son is un-enthusiastic about doing it.he's far more into things like Arnald Shwanzaniger movies like the Terminater than Nursery rhymes. His older brother is a school year ahead and has just moved up to the junior school.I think my other son has really out grown the infantss, and is not enjoying it at all. He's very bright, but also very stuborn, and just doesn't enjoy it or fit in very well at all.But I want him to want to join in,so need to think of something very subtle, that he'll be happy with.I thought maybe "boys and girls come out to play" then he can just be a kid.But I was trying to think of any others, maybe some little prop that can go with it rather than heavey fancy dress( no weapons aloud!)any ideas?
I've just come back from his Harvest festival, all the other kids were singing the songs and joining in the actions etc.He looked so uncomfortable, didn't open his mouth once, and was fidgetingly playing with his fingers.I hate having to stand back and watch him being so uncomfortable in a situation. We don't beleive in God,and it all just seemed like such a load of nonsense. In my opinion the world would be a better place without religeon...but I'm diversing!
So I want him to enjoy tommorrow although I suspect he'll want to just wear his uniform as usual. It just seems a shame if he doesn't join in.Any cool ideas,I might beable to get him to go for?

What about something creepy like Incy Wincy Spider?

Or somebody grand and regal, like Old King Cole or the Grand Old Duke of York.

Or a baddie, like the head chopper in Oranges and Lemons.

As it's close to halloween, how about the spider that frightened miss muffet away? You could wear it twice then and being a spider is pretty cool??? I think asda sell spider outfits but they may be too small depending on child's size...Sounds like he is ready for moving up to the next year to me.

Thanks for that Beccles, yeah he might like that idea, any ideas on how to do it?I guess he could have a carboard axe! but I guess thats classed as a weapon.
Only problem is I think there be quite a few decappitated kids!
You see all the ones for boys that are in anyway cool are cool because of the weapon aspect, thats not aloud.Theres loads of pretty girly ones.

If you put a cardboard box over his head with the front cut out, and fix a cardboard gilloutine blade to the top of the opening, he can poke his head out ready to be chopped off! Or is that too weapon-y?

You could decorate the box with pictures of oranges, lemons and bells, so everyone can guess the rhyme it came from!

My DDs have to dress up tomorrow for Book Week. DD1 (9) is going as 'Daisy' from Sleepovers - Jacqueline Wilson book. Easy peasy, pyjamas, hot waer bottle and teddy bear, and DD2 (6) is going as one of the seven dwarfs - red cycling shorts, red and white striped socks, white shirt, red waistcoat and a white beard.

A couple of years ago, one little boy came as 'Harry and the bucketful of dinosaurs' - yep, he had a bucket of plastic dinosaurs, and won - for sheer originality. Everyone else had come as either Harry Potter or a Disney character, including my two. :rotfl:

    Good Luck with it.

When DS2 was little, he went as The Very Hungry Caterpillar: I sewed a long sleeveless tunic in bright green sheeting, and he wore a green shirt/t shirt underneath. I tied bits of elastic round him at intervals to make him into segments, gave him red cheeks and antennae made from a hairband and pipe cleaners. He looked sooooo sweet!!
Cost about £1 for the sheeting at Dunelm.

I had suggested to him I could wrap his head in vinegar and brown paper!! but for some reason,he didn't like the sound of that!
My partner helpfully suggested he could wear a nappy and jump out of a tree!!!(rock-a-bye baby)but for some reason, didn't much like the idea of that either!
I think it would of been better if they just left it as books rather than nursery rhymes, then Harry potter would of been o.k.
But to be honest,he likes dressing up at home, but not in public, even at halloween. If he's in fancy dress, and someone comes round he runs and hides in bed!So I think anything is going to be hard for him to be talked into!
Thanks for all the ideas so far.

    So why bother?

If he's going to be happier in his school uniform, why not let him go in his school uniform?

all children are different, and not all will enjoy dressing up. So why push it?

DS1 never liked joining in singing either: at nursery the head asked me if I sang to him at home. I said yes, sometimes, and she said he never joined in at school. I said he probably wanted to sing his own song, which has certainly proved to be the case!
