Orange & T Mobile - causing problems?

Similar to another thread here, my Orange Voicemail service is useless.. sometimes I wait 10 days to find out I've got voicemail. But today the whole phone went dead and won't come back, and they are saying it's a faulty handset and that I can pay £170 for a new one or wait 7 days when my new upgrade will be ready. No way am I going with Orange again, they are rubbish. BUT one customer service assistant there said there had been loads of calls today with the same error message. ( 523) Does anyone know anything about this? Might it have anything to do with them accessing T Mobile masts now? Why do we have to remain in a contract when the services they provide are not fit for purpose?! And - final killer question - are ANY of the mobile operators any good, or are we just over the proverbial barrel?
