Psp advice for numpty please...

Can someone please explain in words of two syllables or less what 'firmware' means and why there are so many different bits of advice available as to which 'version' is best?

My hubby has been offered a Psp 1003, firmware version 1.5. and has been hogging [STRIKE]his[/STRIKE] our computer trying to find out if this is considered 'good'. If I want the computer back I need to be able to give him an explanation  .

The word 'homebrew' keeps cropping up as an explanation but as we don't know what that means either it doesn't help. :o

Thanks :o

Firmware is just simply the software that's embedded into the hardware. In the case of the psp it is essentially the operating system of the psp.

Homebrew are just independant games/software people/individuals develop (at home), ie unofficial software. In the case of psp firmware, some updates have locked down the psp to stop it playing unofficial software/homebrew.

Seems to be the case, I don't have a psp so I'm not really much of an expert but this seems to have details of the firmware homebrew compatible versions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psp_homebrew

however some games do require that you have a later version of the firmware to be able to play them.

v1.5 is the best to run homebrew games that people may place online.

Just to add my two penth.

Any psp upto and including version 2.71, without the TA-802 motherboard, can be downgraded.

Certain games require you to have devhook running, due to them not being 1.5 friendly.

If you need any info about up/downgrading your PSP I would suggest a trawl through https://www.psp-hacks.com.

    All the best

Quick update, you can downgrade the TA802 motherboard, but the hack for it is pretty new so personally I would keep your eyes/ears open to ensure its working ok and no problems occur before you go ahead and brick your psp

Here's a very good site from one of the people involved in creating the firmware hacks.

    Thanks chaps :)

Does 'brick' mean that you stop it from up or downgrading?

How can we tell if a psp has been up or downgraded? What do we look for?

Brick would mean it is about as much use a brick and not useable to play games on.
However if your OH has a 1.5 PSP that wouldn't need downgrading..
