Storing a sofa in a shed?

Good Afternoon Peeps,

Can anyone advise me? I am shortly to be moving into the BFs' house and most of my furniture will be used in the house, the biggest item not to be used will be my sofa which we are thinking about storing in the shed.

Can anyone tell me the best way - the shed is a little on the worn side but I don't want the sofa to go mouldy or for mice to have a good gnaw at it.

Should we wrap it in blankets, plastic sheeting, bubble wrap?

Any advice would be appreciated. We'd prefer not to have to pay for storage if we can help it!

Many thanks

    Don't!

Unless the shed has a damp proof membrane underneath and is weather proof the sofa will get damp. You might get away with it in summer but it is the wrong time of year now

As regards mice - you'd need a completely mouse proof box to put the sofa in. I'm afraid mice would just regard any wrapping material as extra bedding to go in the nest they build in the cushion fillings!

You might get away with storing it in a modern solid built garage though.

Could you put other solid furniture in there instead (not chipboard though), crockery or glassware etc. to make room in the house for the sofa?

Suzy is right. Even if its wrapped, it will get condensation on the inside of the wrapping and lead to mould.

No, no, no, no, no. Don't do it. It will not emerge unscathed.

I don't know about the shed that you propose to use, but my shed is full of wood worm. So, something else to bear in mind.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

why not store it with BFs' stuff, if your's is to be mostly used, where is his?
  • I moved back in with my parents and was paying for storage. We weighed up the costs of this and decided for dad to build a shed, waterproof membrane and all. after the winter, the fridge freezer had some mould inside it the sofa was damp, mouldy and smelly.
I had bits and pieces in those massive mouldproof bags from ikea and they were all perfect, so can highly recommend those.
If you are not going to be using the sofa, why not just sell it on, and put the cash away to buy yourself another should you need it.
It won't survive the winter in the shed, so you will have wasted it. If you put it in storage and then stay for a longer period then you will probably have spent more than you would buying a sofa.
    I would sell it.

    Thanks everyone!

I know it's silly to be bothered about selling it but it was the first thing I went and ordered as soon as I left my ex. It's only a year old and I like it more than the one in the house at the moment.

Unfortuntely the BF has only just started paying for his (4 years interest free credit blah blah blah ) so wants to keep it. Mine is all paid for, I paid for it upfront.

I'll see how we feel about storing it properly but it might come to selling it :(

    Crisis averted :)

We are putting it into the box bedroom, with the computer, his turntable and huuuuuge collection of records and CDs ... he's getting comfortable music room! :D

    Thanks for all your advice!

you may put a plastic cover on your sofa and tie it tightly....wish it would be better...
