Requesting a cesarean instead of induction

I have a quick question, hoping for some feedback before I see my midwife again.

I am due to have my third child very soon. Having been induced before (went overdue) I am very keen to avoid it as it was a horrible experience.

I'm not quite overdue yet or even at the point where I would be offered induction (I think it's at 10 days over here) but theoretically speaking, how would I stand if I got to a post dates appointment at the hospital and explained that I really didn't want an induction but preferred an elective c/s?

I must say that I'm not saying that is definitely what I want, rather that I am thinking through and exploring all avenues. I am also looking at the risk involved with both induction and c/s, and also even expectant management to get as balanced a view as possible.

  • I think you would need to speak to your cnsultant and weigh up the pros and cons etc. as I think they send you for an pre-op appointment when your nearly due for if you have any questions? c section recovery is a lot longer than not having one. but ive youve read up on it and know what to expect and still decide thats what you want then theres no harm in asking. but usually from what ive seen they only give c section if medically advised. though every area is different. sorry if ive not been much help x

Obviously every Hospital has different policies, but I wouldn't have thought they'd offer a C section unless you or your baby had suffered complications as a result of being induced last time.

Can I enquire what made it such a horrible experience last time,is there anything that could be done differently if you had to be induced again ?

Remember every birth is different.I was induced with DS2 and personally I had a great Birth and could have done it all again the next day !!! ( I do realise that this isn't always the norm. lol )

With DS3 I had a EMCS after he became distressed during labour (another induction) and it took about 6 weeks before I felt Normal again and it probably took about 3 months for a full recovery - Remember a C section is Major surgery & coupled with a new born to look after it isn't an option to take lightly. I'm not sure about the risks to mum and baby of an induction V C section but any surgery carries a risk of infection which in turn would lead to a longer recovery.

Have a word with your MW and ask about the risks of a C section, make a birth plan based on your last experience and then if you do need to be induced at least you'll feel in control and not at the mercy of the medics.

    Good luck

My SIL had an awful first birth but luckily for her second had a really supportive midwife who pushed for her to have an elective c section for her second.

She was far more relaxed the second time

Suggest you tell your midwife your concerns

    Good luck

Speak to your midwife or Dr.

C-Section is a major op, but it depends what happened in your previous birth, if you had a 3rd degree internal tear previously I know it could be considered, can be just as difficult to recover from serious complications like this. However a C-Section is not an easy option.

Honestly a c/section is a lot worse of an experience than an induction :(.

  • Emergency c- section - the only op under general anaesthetic that they give you a baby to look after once you come round!!

Have a look at this site (I have no connection to them btw), it helped me a lot when I had an elective c-section. There's a link there to the NICE guidelines which have all the risk factor statistics etc.

My advice would be to know your information inside out and perhaps write a letter to formally request your preference to hand to your consultant when you see them.

I had an elective c-section and I have to be honest - the recovery was fine, had no problems- within a couple of days I was walking about as normal, within a week I was walking miles with the pushchair and out and about. I know though that this is not the same for everyone.

    Hope all goes well.

An emergency section yes, but elective section can be a very positive experience.
