economical-ish 4x4? HELP

Hi

I get stuck in the snow EVERY winter and have had enough. I am looking to buy a 4x4 with a maximum budget of 10k. It needs to have 4 doors as have 2 small girls to sit in the back.

Preferably lowish road tax, diesel, and as economical as is able - any ideas would be appreciated

Why don't you buy some winter tyre's? they'll serve you far better than 4x4..... About £60 each.

4x4's on summer tyre's are about as useful as a lawnmower to an eskimo.

In the European ski resorts us Brits in their BMW X5's get laughed off the road by the locals in there "normal" cars, because they use winter tyre's.

The whole 4x4 thing is nothing more than an urban myth combined with heavy handed sales techniques on the part of the car manufacturers.

A 4x4 has:

4 wheels
4 tyre's
4 brakes

So how does that differ from my car??

On the correct tyre's a 4x4 wins hands down in the snow, but we Brits are too tight to buy the correct tyre's!!! we buy the cheapest summer tyre's going and expect them to work when the snow falls!

I don't get stuck in snow in winter and I live in a very rural county. Learn to drive and get winter tyres. A 4x4 cannot compensate for an incompetent driver.

While I agree that winter tyres would be the cheapest solution. You coudl look at something liek a second hand Octaiva 4x4. Bags of room, a large boot, reliabel, 4wd and even better if you put winter tyres on it.

Obviously one of those southern rural counties.

You can't drive in snow if it is higher thn the underside of the car.

Or how about those old Ford Sierra 4x4. Most recent winter saw a 4x4 thinking they were "it" taking a corner at speed, they slid out and lost control :rotfl:

Also got to hate the people in the 4x4's who think it entitles them to drive down the wrong side of the road past a queue of traffic in snow. I'm waiting for the queue and I could probably drive at speed down the other side of the road if I wanted to, but I'm patient and considerate thanks.

I'm in a similar situation to the OP. I have a regular car (Mondeo) but my solution would be to get a set of spare wheels with winter tyres on and keep them in the shed until needed. As much as I love 4x4 vehicles I can't live with the price of buying one or running one for the 362 days a year that snow is not a problem.

Last winter, my normal tyres were almost new. They had a lot of tread (about 8mm) and even that was enough for me to make fools of the 4x4 drivers with the 'drug dealer' wheels and tyres on that I see a lot of round my way! Proper winter tyres and I'd be sorted.
