When people make personal attacks on other people who don't agree with them and can argue logically regardless of their own personal circumstances it's not surprising posts are removed.
True, I was called "thick" and "stupid" several times by one regular poster because I argued against her viewpoint. I was informed via PM from people I respect on here that the individual in question dishes out regular abuse and not to take it to heart. Its all forgetten now, but to be honest I would have been glad for those abusive posts to have remained in the thread, on record in case of future transgressions.0 -
You obviously don't recognise hyperbole when it is used for effect
the point being universal benefits are used to ensure the support of the middle classes for benefits primarily aimed at the poor.
Then it's a premise that is fundamentally flawed and shows a bewildering contempt for people's self-respect.
But, then again, it worked on carolt, so what do I know?0 -

It has worked on a great many readers of the Express, Mail and Telegraphand has already invoked some appeasement. BTW the NHS is also a universal benefit.

Do you ever let anyone else have the last word?
BTW. The NHS is a publicly funded service that is used by those who need it, not by those who don't.
Ergo, it is not a 'benefit', and neither is it universal, except insofar as it's universally available. A different proposition altogether.0 -

The NHS is a universal service. Big difference, you only use it if you need it. To be a benefit it would have to be given to all rather than be there if you should need it and if you want to use it.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. They don't have to self assess, they can simply not claim if their joint income is above the child benefit threshold, same for HR taxpayers of course. Like I said it doesn't have to be complicated, and your tax credit idea is also worthy of consideration.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A touch of pedantic semantics there, are you then saying that child benefit is a service because it is not given to all you have to claim it?'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. Mind you I'm just watching the One Show where Lord Alan Sugar is complaining about receiving the Winter Fuel payment automatically. Apparently you can't opt out of it and he tried.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

For the record (again, because a lot of posts on this thread have been deleted my the moderators) I agree that people who earn over £50k should not receive CB, but even more than that, COUPLES who earn over a combined £50k should not receive it either. I
i disagree. you are completely ignoring the need for the domestic work (childcare, housework) to be carried out. if both parents are working they will need to pay for this and/or lose considerable amounts of leisure time.
they should however make special consideration for single parents who don't have the benefit of a non working parent at home to do childcare / housework.
to get a combined household income of 50k takes double the working hours of the single high earner. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -
