    Thanks for the help guys.
I am struggling to understand some of the operations that you are advising & so, for me, it's a slow process.
I have just been on dlink website. It says that the router is backward compatible to 802.11b/g adapters. So I assume that I don't have to bother about changing any settings to include these.
As I said in my original post, connecting a couple of laptops was easy, although I can't remember what the process was, so I'm dismayed that connecting a desktop is such a faff.

On the D-Link settings page along the top are tabs labelled "set up", "advances", "maintenance", "status" and "help". Down the left are tabs labelled "internet set up", wireless set up", "Lan set up", "time & date", "parental control" & "logout"
Yeah it may say mixed mode or G/N , I think that should be in wireless set-up, tried to downlink the manual but dlink.co.uk is not working

It is backward compatible but if it set up for just N then it won't work with your pluscom, you need to see if it has N/G/B or G/B and not just N
