Can't connect to wifi network

I've looked through "sticky" but can't find the answer.

I am trying to connect a desktop to our secured wifi connection but I'm having problems. In the past there haven't been any problems in setting up a couple of laptops and the Wii (there have been problems with our netbook but I've given up on that for the moment!). I've plugged in the USB adapter and the software has loaded. Our wifi network is being picked up with a good strength signal. The problem is that it is perpetually trying the validate, at no stage am I asked for a password or encryption key. I have been through a number of "helps" etc but have not been successful.

Please can somebody point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

    Sorry about that.

My SP is Virginmedia who supplied me with a D-Link DIR-615 router. The operating system is XP. The dongle is a Pluscom 802.11. And the firewall is McAfee personal wirewall plus

Thanks in anticipation of any help you can offer.

wireless router is enabled for 802.11n. not sure if your USB adapter is enabled. you didnt give a complete model no of adapter so dont know.

however router is also backward compatible to 802.11 b/g but i am not sure if that needs to be setup on router.

try to look in router settings, virgin can help you get there or u should have got a CD/manual that shows how to get there. it involves opening a web browser and typing something like 192.16.....to get to router settings page. this will need ethernet cable and password for router. virgin can definately help you with password. post back with details to see what you found and we can have a look further.

USB adapter is a/b/g - normally the router default setting should be to use mixed b,g and N, but you need to log into the router's web-based interface to check it's not on n only. refer to the user guide to see how

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • If it is set correctly to b/g/n when you log into the router, and still won't work, try changing the wireless channel (normal range in the UK is 1 - 11). Try one at either end of the range, avoid the middle channels as nearly all routers are on 6 by default.

On the D-Link settings page along the top are tabs labelled "set up", "advances", "maintenance", "status" and "help". Down the left are tabs labelled "internet set up", wireless set up", "Lan set up", "time & date", "parental control" & "logout"

When I click on "status" for router settings it is showing "Wireless 802.11N". Do I need to alter this to include "G" or "B" as these are the letters showing on the adapter?

Yeah it may say mixed mode or G/N , I think that should be in wireless set-up, tried to downlink the manual but dlink.co.uk is not working

As it's a dlink I'd go into the RSP (that's using the 192.168 etc number) and first remove the encryption to check it does connect-then once that is established -set it to WEP.

I would be happier if it was WPA-2 Personal
