Local pickup - charged?

I was checking local ebay and saw some furniture. The seller has collection only, but has £4 as cost. Is this a common occurence, as I've not noticed it before? £4 seems a bit steep.

It seems lots of sellers charge for this, the inconvenience of being in, having people come to the house etc.
Personally I'm happy for people to collect for free as it saves me having to package for posting, as long as they're happy to pay cash on collection.0 -
Is the item a lot cheaper than buying it from another seller?
I would try and avoid buying from someone who charges for collection, But if the item
was really cheap even with that charge then i would buy it.
No point moaning about the charge afetrwards though, As long as its clear what they do charge.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I would probably message them just to double check it was correct. It's easy to make mistakes when listing, especially if you're recycling an old auction.:j30/7/10:j

Sellers are perfectly within the rules to charge for pickup. Large business's seem to do it more as they still have to pay staff for time etc. Small sellers can easily argue that time waiting in for people is time wasted. It seems to be happening more.
I have a friend who does a lot of local pick up items (i personally never do any) he has recently started charging due to the amount of people attempting to haggle after the auction or who were really not that serious. Apparently since he started charging a nominal charge (£3) he has had far less problem buyers and no drop in sales0 -

So if it takes you 5 minutes to pick the item up and they're charging £4 for it - they value their time at £48 per hour.
