tune up utilities question

thanks. my pc does seem to be starting up a bit quicker now though. things seem to be opening a little quicker as well. i only installed it coz it came free with kaspersky 2011. that brings me to another worry. i havent installed that yet as 2010 doesnt run out until the end of the month. the worry is i have noticed that it requires 1gb of ram. my pc only has 1gb. so i am worried it either wont run or it will run very slow and even make the whole system run slow. i guess if it turns out bad i will have to go out and get something else that requires less ram to run.tuneup/tweaking utilities are snake oil, unlikely to make any positive difference to speed, and likely to slow things down if anything. Less is more, especially if it puts things in your startup
Most of the slow pc hijackthis logs on here have too much security and tweaking software, which instead of helping speed, causes the problem.0 -
It won't need 1GB all to itself, it means 1GB in total for windows etc.
Avast uses less ram, but kaspersky should be ok provided you cut down on all the other things loading at startup.
You could always upgrade the ram.!!

thanks. i was starting to get worried that if security software gradually starts to require more and more each year that i am going to have to get a new pc when the one i have is working fine. i really dont like replacing things unless they are either broken or very old. i want at least another 2 years out of this pc before even considering getting a new one.It won't need 1GB all to itself.0 -
ram upgrades don't cost much, no reason to replace the pc, it will be a decade or two before antivirus software needs 1GB of ram all to itself, although some are pretty bloated.!!

i am aware that i could actually download kaspersky 2011 now. would i be able to use the code i got with the version i bought from a shop when my current sub runs out? or would the code only work with the disc it came with?
also what is the best way to go about it if i do install 2011 now. would it be,
1. save kis 2011 to the pc.
2. remove kis 2010 from pc.
3. install kis 2011.
4. use the current code from my current kis 2010 sub until end of month.
5. at end of month put in the new kis 2011 code to renew sub.
am i right that that is the way to do it?0
