Pentium 4 or Pentium D?

Since my PC broke last week I really need to buy another. I've looked online and in stores and have seen that some PC's are a pentium 4 and others are a pentium D. Can someone tell me what the difference is and whether it is better to get a pentium 4 or pentium D.

  • The Pentium D is the more recent and generally better CPU. It has 2 processors on one chip which means it can run certain applications faster. The Pentium D has now been superseded by the Core 2 Duo, which is definitely worth looking at for your next PC and will give you more future-proofing.

You can get dual core pentium 4s, which are good chips.

But I am sorry to push you, but can get good and bad pentium 4's and d's. You need to give us more information on the computers you are thinking of, if you are looking online, if you show us a link we can tell you if its any good.

But chippy is right that the core 2 duos are the way forward at the moment.

I looked at the p4's but found they were hit and miss and struggled with some larger applications. Haven't tried D chip so can't comment. In the end I went for athlon 3500+, been working a treat since.

  • Thank you for your replies. The base unit that I was looking at is THIS one. The price is £549.99 but the guy in Comet said I can purchase it for £520.

    Is it any good?

A link to the the above if poss!!..Thanks
  • Looks like the price has gone up slightly!!:( You can get the same system as above but with a 250gb hard disk for 520 quid!! Remember to configure the processor to the X2 3800+ and reduce the support service to a minimum!!

    http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&oc=D10C16&rbc=D10C16&s=dhs&sbc=ukdhsftdppdesktop1

I think that Quidco gives 5% cash back though so that should bring the price down to just under 500 quid!! :)
  • Just put this system together using Dells "build your system" went for this processor......... AMD® Athlon™ 64 X2 4200+ Processor (2.20GHz, 2x512K cache)....total came to £573. Just a quick question or two if it is okay CTF or anyone intrested!!!.....don't need the monitor!..if i ring the Dell boys and say to them i am intrested in buying this system...but don't need the monitor will they sell it with without the monitor?? (and a few bob off??).....also ...........doing a bit of research on the web...the general concensus is that Intels newer Core Duo chips....seem to give it to AMD X2s Dual Core up the backside!!!!..is it worth paying a bit more for the Intel chip???....!!!!.................... just saved my system...and found out i have just been stung for an extra £60 for shipping!!!!!!...i thought Vat & Shipping where included in the price?????????????
