Might be homeless soon

Basically I live with someone I know from work with my girlfriend who is 17. Well I got sacked for gross misconduct and can no longer pay my friend rent and he wants me to leave. Basically I have a week to find somewhere to stay for me and my girlfriend, I have no money either. Not sure what to do because I looked online and I could be classed as intentionally homeless. Anyone any ideas, I've worked for the last year and helped look after my girlfriend while she studies in college.

How old are you? Could you move back to your parents (either together or separately) as an interim measure?

I'm 20 and before I got this job I lived at my parents but they now have another baby and moved to a smaller place so there's no room there. I will be going to the local housing office but just getting a few ideas what to expect as I'm worrying myself to death over it.

We would never leave each other no matter what though, been together for 3 years.

If your area is like most of the country, you will be placed in a hostel. However I am unsure what will happen about your gf, as many hostels stipulate that residents must be eighteen. Could she not go home? Could you sleep on your parents sofa for a while? It would be better than the hostel.

You could make a claim for Local housing allowance to pay the rent?
I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.

I got the impression that the current arrangement was an informal one, but could be wrong. ;)

  • Yes its informal, no way of getting housing benefit for current address.

An informal agreement still suggests an element of consideration?

If the op has to pay rent to occupy and as a result of not being able to pay it, has been asked to leave, that sounds like a tenancy to me?

A TA can be verbal and evidenced by way of letter etc but as OP has said that isn't the case, I will back out gracefully!!
