Doors now too short- ideas please?

Had nice thick carpet everywhere in the house. Also had lovely old panelled doors in bad condition so spent month stripping them and re-painting them by hand...long story short, had a new boiler and rads fitted - had 3 major floods due to shoddy workmanship (long story and yes I have dealt with that) so we decided in the end to strip and sand all the floorboards instead of laying more carpet. (that can get wet etc)

It's been a mission doing the floors but it's done and looks amazing. However, without carpet and underlay...all the doors are near an inch, inch and a half too short now!

Any ideas to remedy this the MSE way? Did think about that brush draught excluder strip stuff but as I have pets - the idea of that getting full of pet hair put me off. Would love any ideas please - would hate to loose my lovely doors after all that work on them!

Thanks

Take the doors off and let a joiner place an extra strip around/under your architrave, surely that would mean you could re-position them?

If your doors are painted then the simple solution is to add about an inch of extra timber to the bottom of each. It will mean a an extra topcoat all over but will surely be worth it.

I'm not sure reducing the headroom on the door case and rehnging the doors lower down is a good idea TBH from both aesthetic and cracked head points of view.

Thanks for those suggestions. Adding the extra timber, I think will look odd and/or lowering the height of the doors sounds an expensive and huge effort solution.

Still going to have to think about this one I think :)

Actually doh...just got what you mean about adding extra timber to the front and back of each door. I was thinking you meant adding a strip to the underneath of each door which I feel would have looked odd - but this may work. Thanks

It would if they were just stained, oiled or varnished but you said they are painted. So a repaint after addition will disguise it sufficiently as to be almost unnoticeable.

and it will look carp IMHO too.:D

What about putting in a threshhold strip on the floor, the same thickness as the door, but the same wood as the floor?

Another idea I saw in someone else's house was a rug placed in front of the door, it disguised the space and helped cut down draughts but I would imagine this would only look ok in certain situations?

put a strip of wood on the bottom of the door ..then buy these off ebay

    http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=brass+kick+plate&_sacat=0&_odkw=brass+door+plate&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313

or you could go to make it look like the repair wasnt an add-on botch ..and put something like a completly different wood under the door ..maybe a very dark wood ..make it look like its a door protector rather than a bodge...or have it routed so that it looks like a moulding .

Those brass door plates look great however, that would cost a heap as I would need 16 of them to do front an back of each door.lol

Skint now after stripping, sanding and varnishing floors :)

Thanks everyone. Anyone know where you can get these in bulk and cheap - please shout! :)
  • if you do add a piece of wood to the bottom ..only glue it or Screw it to the bottom rail ..and not to the styles ..as the styles expand and contract along their width more than the bottom rail does along it length .

those kick plates are available considerably cheaper in other finishes ..like stainless .

if you don't feel like paying for mouldings ..you could screw and glue the wood there ..and put an architrave each side of it .

  • Not sure how big these are, but they push under the door and cover both sides.

They might not cover an 1.5" but perhaps you could make some up with a couple of lengths of foam pipe lagging inside a material sausage?

Thanks, but I have pets (3) and can't bare the thought of those getting clogged with pet fur :0
