  • im really confused now. is the law different in dfferent counties??? im in surrey and i have had it confirmed to me that you can park infront of a dropped kerb, unless its a pedestrian dropped kerb, like at a crossing etc. you cannot park there if there is a car on the driveway as you cannot block an 'exit' incase of emergency but no law saying you cant block an 'entrance'.

I didn't realise that you might be able to park across a driveway with permission. My daughter has received a parking ticket for parking across our drive.

On our house, we are putting a drive in this week. £60 for application, nearly £2k to have our front garden suitable gravelled (now all driveways have to have permeable surfaces), up to £1k for the council to drop the kerb (only when they are satisfied that our front garden has been suitably adapted)

I live in Surrey too (Runnymede Borough) and it is definitely the case that you CANNOT park across someone else's driveway without their express consent. The law changed a while ago to reflect this, i'm not sure when, but it did used to be the case that you could only park across a driveway if there was no car on it.

Apparently the police enforce the law if you have blocked someone on their driveway (because it's akin to unlawful imprisonment or something like that) and they have powers to remove your car.

Whereas it's actually the council that will issue the parking ticket if you obstruct a private driveway and the landowner instructs them too.

I'm not sure why there is the distinction, but am sure someone else on this board probably does :)

I live in scotland a a neighbour who has 2 driveways (garage on 1) and dropped kerbs across both constantly rings police if any vehicle parks even 2 inches into his dropped kerb not blocking him in , he not going (nor cars in either driveway out but still he calls the police and they come out and even go door to door to find out who's vehicle it is.?
Last November he came out and assaulted my 21 yr old son because my sons friends car (not his ) he said was blocking him in NOT
he been charged and there is now a court case in June he still though continues to call the police did last weekend and they seem to be
encouraging his out of control behaviour and endorsing the fact he thinks it ok to assualt an innocent person over his "%&** driveway
PLEASE NOTE AT NO TIME HAS HE EVER IN 4 YEARS BEEN ACTUALLY BLOCKED IN BY ANYONE.

Maybe he (the neighbour) has an Inspector friend in the police force :-)
