Collection only, buyer paid with paypal, help

I have sold a large item for £100 collection only. The buyer has 200 feedback (mostly small items). They live 80 miles away but said they will be in my area on business next week. They have paid by paypal. Is there any way to protect myself against chargeback?

Tell them if they are collecting you will only take cash, reject the paypal payment as you will NOT be covered if they disappear with it.

    You have to take Paypal.

You could email him and thank him for his swift payment. Explain that you would prefer cash on collection and offer him a discount for doing so. If he agrees you can refund the PP payment once he has paid.

Realistically this is all you can do, however you would have to refund th epaypal payment first as it could take 5 workign days to go back to buyer and i can't see them wanting to pay twice up front just to do you a favour.

Which can then lead to a non performing seller complaint a neg, and the OP getting stuck with her £10 FVFs.

OP elected to sell this on ebay and there are risks, if this is a baby item or electrical item i might be more prepared to risk a neg and lose my FVFs, if it is something less likely to be scammed then I'd do a little leg work on the buyer, address etc, and probably take the risk.

thanks soolin ... its something I have been trying to get rid of for ages, tried the free newspaper ads then even paid to advertise it in local paper, so maybe I just have to take the risk.

Soolin (of course) is right, I hadn't thought about a delay in PP payment being refunded. Perhaps you could delay the collection a little and email asking if he would mind if you refund his PP payment and offer the cash discount.

Just do a little research on the buyer, check out the address, is it real, check out goofbay etc. Also beware if this is baby equipment as that is one of the most scammed areas.(horrible isn;t it)

Finally, it never hurts to offer a small discount for cash instead, you never know they might say yes.

How does this work with paypal gift? I know when things are sold privately on other sites they insist on this method of payment, so whats the difference for the seller and the buyer in this situation?

If payment is sent as a gift any charges can be paid by the buyer instead of the seller, however a payment from a balance transfer would be free to both.

There is no buyer protection at all with a gift payment and the buyer is warned not to use it for anything other than a payment he wishes to 'gift' to someone he knows.

In this instance if buyer is using paypal for protection, he would not wish to gift it. If he is using paypal because he wants to put the cost on a card then charges apply and it might get complicated if oP wants to refund the original payment, wait say 5 days for it to clear back to buyer, then ask him to gift it across instead and make arrangements for the fees. It all starts to look a little 'scammy'.

Just as an aside any site that expected me to pay for something using the gift option would be considered by me to be a scam or dodgy site.

Ahh! So it protects the seller to use gift, and the buyer to use it 'normally'. Well I have got an idiot bidding on something of mine who I want to block because they keep sending me ridiculous emails and don't seem legit but can't find out how to block them, (not been selling for ages) so if they win I will insist they pay using gift, then they can't scam me like I think they will do. Unless I can find the block button first.................

If that doesn't work or takes you to mine  then...

HELP - type in block bidders
Manage bidders and buyers (top result)
Blocking bidder and buyers (second result)
Second yellow box = block bidders or buyers from your listing.

Have their user name in paste.
