how much of a hurry are you in?

wiping and reinstalling vista, complete with all applications and drivers, can take a few hours, and will lose all data on the drive, all bookmarks, favorites, documents, pictures etc...

if you have a friend that can download and burn one of those disks this has to be plan A, else, if you can wait a couple of days to sort it out I can burn the disk and post it to you (free, won't cost me more than a quid)

.....oh, just noticed both you and your son have user accounts - who has the administrator account..and password?

Try on booting and use the F8 key to get into safe mode, then when asked for Administator password just press the logon key, the Admin password is usually blank. If that lets you in then I think you can change the user (your password) however I am not sure, so try and see if it does work.

this also gets a good writeup

I can confirm this works on Windows 7, using the Vista version. Just tried it and it told me my password with remarkable speed!
You'll need to download the ISO image (about 500Mb) and have a CD burner with software (I used ImgBurn as it's free), but it will probably do the trick and save a reinstall.

Thank you so much everyone, especially DatabaseError, that was such a kind offer

I figured that as I'd lost the pics and music anyway I'd reboot on F12 (about the only tech knowledge I could bring to mind!). So it's all wiped clean and I'm starting from scratch. So been busy redoing anti-virus, reinstalling AOL, media player etc etc etc. All's well that ends well, thanks again

I did that when my PC ran uncontrollably fast to try and slow it down. it did end up crashing though:p
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

It does crash with alarming regularity. Wasn't too bad until they sent me a new DLink router a few weeks ago, and had nothing but problems since
