I was watching TV this afternoon and Gary Rhodes was on and he made these vegetarian sausage roll alternatives and they looked so lovely I thought I would have a go at making them for tea and they were fantastic. You need 8oz self raising flour, 4oz vegetarian (or ordinary) suet (I had the Atora light), salt and a pinch of baking powder - you just mix it all up together and then add enough water to make a pastry. You roll it out fairly thin and top with 5oz of grated cheese (I used up bits I had left of Red Leicester and Cheddar) and a chopped onion - I didn't have an onion so I sprinkled on some dried chives and a sprinkling of mustard powder and black pepper. Then you roll it up like a swiss roll into a long sausage and cut it into 2inch lengths, egg wash it and bake at 200 for 20 minutes. They smelt, looked and tasted lovely and were demolished for tea by very fussy DD's. The suet crust goes all puffy and crispy.

I've just seen this in UKTV food and was a bit a bit put off by the amount of cheese that seemed to leak out of his cheese rolls.I have the mind of a criminal genius. I keep it in the freezer next to Mother....0

I put mine closer together than he did and there wasn't as much leakage, and when they had settled after coming out the cheese went all crispy and tasted nice, but then I love cheese....Jane
