This should disable the modem, as you probably don't need it with broadband anyway.....

    Start, Control Panel, System
    Device Manager button
Find modem, may be under Other Devices
Right Click on Modem and select disable.

Then use the laptop and see if you don't get the sound.

If you do need the modem for some reason, like sending faxes, you can always enable it again using the same method.

Next time it happens press ctrl/alt/del & on the popup window (Windows Task Manager) see if dialup is trying to connect.

You can set the volume level of the tones on modems so turning it up loud & it happens again their'll be no ambiguity as the loud level will be blatant :)

To find out goto Start > control panel > system > hardware > device manager > modems > double click your modem > modem (tab) > speaker volume.

Could be a software piece configured to use a modem & not broadband (nic or usb modem). Could be virus. Poor do if so as normally things simply look for any active internet connection but, still :)

Ok. Have disabled it because if things go to hell then I can always enable it again. I think...
Re turning up the volume, it happens so fast that I wouldnt have time to get the task manager, it's just bleepbleepbleepbleep very fast then goes off. :D
    Thank you very much :A

If that does get rid of the noise, it would still be useful to find out what was causing it. Maybe you'll get an error message giving you a clue.
If the noise continues, we're back to square one except that the modem has been eliminated as the source!
    Hope it works out.

Is it a tone as in DTMF tones or is it a clicking as in the old style rotary dialler telephones? If its the latter its the cooling fan packing up.

    That may be your problem.
Have you got malwarebytes anti-malware on there. If not, it's worth getting.
Then run a full scan with it and see if it can clear anything.

    Edit:
Sorry, you've mentioned you have. Still worth doing a full scan if you haven't already though.

Don't have a Asus laptop or motherboard do you?

Have you run the latest version of Malwarebytes?
