weird noise on laptop

How does your laptop connect to the internet......dial up, or broadband0
-
wireless broadband0

Sounds like it's trying to connect using dial up. Try looking in the connections tab of internet explorer..under tools internet options. What operating system are you using0

Em, firefox . Would this suddenly just start to happen for no reason ? With FF would I still look at the IE tools bit ? TY x0
-
I went into internet connections and its already ticked "never dial a connection" so its not that..0

Could be a (poorly written) virus trying to "phone home". Might be worth looking at the antivirus sticky on this forum...0

Verify that it really is something trying to dial out on the laptop's modem (assuming it has one) by disabling it and see if the sound goes away. You said you "keep getting the noise like somebody is dialling on a phone."
If it does get rid of the noise, you'll still need to find out what is doing it and a good anti-virus check may well do that as already suggested, but at least you'll have ascertained what is making the noise.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. I dont know how to do that Victor...I wouldnt even know if this had a modem ! It has happened 3 days in a row now, each day at about the same time. Never had this before its very odd. Could it be anything to do with the wireless router ?0
-
What version of Windows are you running?
It will be fairly easy to find out if you have a modem once that is established.
Either way, it's worth doing a virus scan. Do you use any anti-virus software?
It's unlikely to be the wireless router as they're generally soundless as well as wireless.:)I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards.
