Paying for airport trolleys - since when?

Just got back from Brum, and found that they've now started charging a non-refundable pound to use the trolleys. I was seriously not impressed - not used Birmingham for a while, but I'm sure when I used the London airports last year the trolleys were still free. Got a bad arm at the moment, so I didn't have any choice but to pay up.
Is this now becoming the norm, or is it just Birmingham getting tight-fisted?

Bristol also charges. If the airports have to reduce charges to Ryanair, easyJet etc. they'll try to get the money elsewhere - trolley charges, higher parking charges, paying for 'fast-track' security.

Booooo, used Birmingham aeroport a few years back and they were free, tight fisted.

Main US airports have charged for years - certainly for departing passengers.

Charges such as this seem to be creeping in here as well

Seem to do this a lot in other places too now.. Though when you think abou tit they do have to employ someone to move them round the airport so i guess if anything it covers a part of that

Last time we came back through Gatwick (last month) they were charging £1 but you got it back.

No wonder you weren't impressed.

Luton charge a non refundable £ however here in the home of all things bright and lovelly, stansted, you get your quid back.

If you have to pay , don't take the trolly back , at least someone else can use it .

Ha Ha,
I do this at LAS when we land. I go over to checkin and always find a trolly laying around, they charge $4 for one and only give you back 25 cents if you return it!!
