Good evening all,
We have just moved into an unheated..[apart from 1959 underfloor heating.!] bungalow. We have just ordered a Stovax inset 7 convector stove with a highest output of 7kKW. As we have always had gas CH and a gas fire, we are very new to the multifuel stove idea. Could anyone who already has a stove advise us on what kind of quantity of wood we would need for the autumn, winter season.?
Many thanks
Sue~

Hi suey. We have a multi fuel burner but just in the living room and we just burn logs.
We use the burner evenings only after work (Sept/April) and all day Sat and Sun most weeks.
We got 2 tons well seasoned hardwood delivered in July which my OH split and stacked in a covered, well aired outhouse. We reckon this will last the winter as its comparable to what we've felled ourselves in previous years (getting too old for that now...lol)
We live in a very remote(cold) part of Scotland and the log burner is fantastic for heating our large living room. Takes about an hour to really get going then its toasty:D0 -
Wood for stoves should be cut one year for use the next.
I know there is nothing you can do about it now but is worth bearing in mind for next year.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
The type of wood will also make a difference to both cost (if buying) and tio burn times.
7Kw is the Maximum output of the stove.
I guess you will run it at the level you require once you get used to it.
You could also get yourself a 'logmaker'. You basically pulp down your old paper then form it into 'bricks' - these will burn for up to an hour (very aprox). It can be messy or fun...all depends on your outlook!
If it is a multifuel stove (vs a dedicated woodburner) it will not be quite as efficient for wood. You may also wish (or not) to look at coal or peat (depending on costs/location etc) as these will generally burn with better efficiency.
Its could also be worth watching for new houses/roads etc....being constructed where trees are being removed as they may allow you to cut up and remove the trees. However some builders these days are quite savvy and will sell good wood such as Walnut, Oak, Cherry etc.... to local sawmills as they can fetch a good price. If its Pine - they may pay you to take it away! (just buy a cheap rug for in from of the fire as sparks will end up landing on it!)
Good luck with itI am NOT a Woman! - its Overland Landy (as in A Landrover that travels Overland)
Better to be approximately right than precisely wrong.0 -
will be interested to see how you get on as I had a riva 40 installed in march with the good summer have not needed to fire it up until the other night when I was well pleased. I have seasoned logs to use.0
