She has a first simple caution.

No such thing as minor conviction. Conviction of any kind requires a court appearance.

A girl at 14 nicking a car or illegally entering a house?

    Highly unlikely.

I would wager stealing something in a shop.

OP, I would just apply to lesser Draconian college if one exists.

Seek legal advice too as I bet there are thousands ofsuch situations like this from petty 'offences'.

The OP said that it was shoplifting. S/he also said that the same requirement was in the prospectuses of other local colleges.

Of some indirect relevance to the OP's enquiry is this information about the new vetting and barring scheme which is being introduced post Soham. If nothing else, it illustrates how employment is being tightened up in these areas.

I have arranged student placements for a college anbd believe me, whatever they said to you on the phone if asked to take a student with a less than perfect CRB disclosure invariably employers refuse. If they have a choice they will choose someone else, and so the college then have a dilemma, if placement is a mandatory part of the course they have no option but to ask the student to go.

A way round it could be to ask the college if your daughter could stay if she finds her own placement, and then see how many of the places you phoned will put their money where their mouth is.

A caution isn't the same thing as a general warning or ticking off! People only receive cautions if they accept them and agree that they have committed the offence. I don't know the situation with teenagers but , if an adult receives a caution, it never disappears from his/her record.

the OP did not say it was in the prospectuses of other local colleges. I was fairly sure I had read the thread before posting (apart from the shoplifting bit :p) and the OP said it is in other prospectuses but didn't specify if she gained that info from reading online after reading the article she posted or if it was from contacting other local colleges. There is still hope that another college will accept her locally. :)

The other issue is time taken, it is all very well for employers to say they would judge every case on merit, in practice this means they would say they would consider it, and on the ground, for a college w/p officer that means constant calls to see where the consideration is at and constant fobbing off, and underlying that, the knowledge that a placement which another student could have is lying idle.

These are voluntary placements and whilst employers may in some instances be prepared to go the extra mile to ensure a job applicant is given the necessary consideration, I am afraid the same does not apply to student placement workers, as there are more than enough to go around and nurseries(in fact all employers ime) can be, and are, choosy.

Its the unfairness of the whole process given that currently there is no right to get the record expunged/corrected/amended. You can't blame the college for taking a belt and braces approach t such matters. Unfortunately the only way to get the rules changed is for our MP's to do something in Parliment.
I'm sure I read that the vast majority of children & vulnerable adults are abused by parents, other family members (including extended) and family friends. CRB checks, enhanced or otherwise doesn't do anything to protect these victims and never will. The CRB check and the other regulation (can't remember its name) fail on all levels.
As for the holier than everyone else brigade may you never live in a glass house.
