College says people without a 100% clean enhanced CRB will NOT get a job in a nursery

I work in a childrens nursery and also know someone who works as a Manager in another....the person who works as a Manager had a blemished CRB for a caution for alledged theft (long story but the theft was never proved...and hence the caution )...one nursery employed her after ..then when finding this on her CRB dismissed her.....2 more...including the job she now has had no problem employing her at all.....I think it is Employers discretion.0

Has your daughter also written a letter of appeal to the college? They might give it more consideration if it comes from her rather than from you, because if you complain about it but she doesn't it might appear as if you are a pushy parent and she isn't too bothered, if you see what I mean!0

I find this situation that a 17 year old girl has found herself in absolutely incredible!
OP you seem to be trying to do all the right things to sort this ridiculous mess out, have you approached the local education department about this? I would also consider approaching local newspapers to this is UK PC madness at its best it really is!
The whole CRB system has been seriously flawed since it commenced, why children under the age of 16 are even catalogued in this way is beyond me, crikey we were all kids once I am sure some of us did something stupid at one time and maybe had to have a word with a policeman but none of us hae had our whole working lives destroyed due to stupid mistake when we were kids, incredible it is the only word I can think of to describe this bizarre situation.
I really dont have any concrete advice to offer I wish I did, just try your hardest to make as much of a song and dance about it locally as you can and hopefully someone at the college that lives in the "real" world and has a brain cell will look at this mess again for you.
For the life of me I cannot understand why reprimands and cautions are recorded anyhow, after all the person has never been actually convicted of anything, its kind of a get out clause from the police when they have little or no evidence surely there must be a way to challenge this there has to be, otherwise the CRB people could be holding all sorts of inaccurate data on any of us!
I wonder if you were to speak to the local police again if they could help in any way? I am sure they would not want to see this young girls working life tainted through a silly mistake when she was 14? None of it is even relevant!!!!
The CRB system is in itself a great idea, but I have said right from the beginning they should only be recording what is not considered a "petty" crime unless the person was of course a serial petty crime offender, for one off things like this there should be a second chance given there really should be someway of correcting this.
The whole CRB system is naff anyhow, I knew a girl a few years ago who got sent to prison when she was 21 for stealing from her employer, she served 6 months in jail which if you knew the full circumstances was exceptionally harsh to begin with, 11 years later she applied for a job in a care home, she had to have a enhanced CRB check and passed it with flying colours, no record whatsoever of her misdemeanor, at the time she put it down to the conviction being "spent" but from what has been said here that could not be the case, geeessshhh caution staying on your file till your 100 whatever next!
Best of luck OP shout from the highest roof top to anyone that will listen, it may not get the result you want but it is the only thing I can think of doing

No - she was actually on the course for a week and when they bothered to look at the CRBs started to tell people they had to leave.0 -
A couple of years ago, a friend, who is a primary school teacher, was arrested while taking part in a non-violent anti-nuclear protest. I can't claim to know the precise details, but I believe the outcome was such that it did appear on her CRB disclosure. I'm sure there are many more people who have taken part in supposedly 'criminal' activity in the name of promoting active citizenship and democracy, however her teaching career has suffered no ill effects.
I studied towards a degree in childhood studies whereby I undertook placements in childcare settings, and now am studying towards a leadership qualification in the early years stage. My CRB discloses an arrest and caution made during a protest, the university and college made no fuss over it and neither did any of the placements I undertook (in fact I had a lengthy political discussion with the one of the managers of the setting about it all!)
From personal experience then I can say that the college's policy is rather draconian, surely they should take into account the type of crime committed and judge the situation aptly?
I hope your daughter gets sorted. Childcare is a brilliantly rewarding profession and I can't wait until I am qualified and out in the workplace properly.trying to become a moneysaving student0 -

They have probably had their funding cut and need to lower their numbers. It's happening all over the place, including universities.0 -
Just been reading some more and found this (If you read some of the comments people have added at the end, people's lives have been ruined in some cases):

You don't even need to have been convicted or had a caution or anything it seems - an allegation with be shown on an enhanced CRB for life and will prevent you going on courses at certain colleges!0 -

It will be a funding issue, to do with over subscription or the college's targets for leavers into work; they perhaps viewed the OP's daughter as less likely to get work.cardigan29 wrote: »Just been reading some more and found this (If you read some of the comments people have added at the end, people's lives have been ruined in some cases):

Can you not approach a different college? Or look on the Connexions website for Training Providers who offer the level 3, perhaps in employment? Good luck in whatever you try!0 -

Much of this was introduced after Ian Huntley was convicted and many people believe that the murders wouldn't have taken place if these measures had been already in place.0 -

Actually no - it wouldn't have prevented it:

And it's not a funding issue either - other colleges have this in their prospectus so it's not something they just bring in when over-subscribed or funding has been cut.0
