And it's not a funding issue either - other colleges have this in their prospectus so it's not something they just bring in when over-subscribed or funding has been cut.
If that's the case, I'm puzzled as to why you're surprised that the situation has arisen.0 -

But many people believe it could - which is what I said.0 -

It may just be the nature of whats on the CRB and how long ago as milie and SarEl says.
I also teach and although my CRB is clean, I know a number of people in the sector who have convictions. Some are minor, some could be considered reasonably serious, yet irrelevant to the safety of children and vulnerable persons.
Ditto to a few people I know also in the "enhanced CRB" job category who are not 100% squeaky clean.
Perhaps it's a case of the course is particularly competitve, and the college are looking for ways to narrow down the number of applicants?
Shame, really, because who didn't do something stupid in their youth, whether formally reprimanded for it or not!0 -

Would you always describe theft as just "stupid"?0 -
She does NOT rightly have to suffer this. What was it a penny sweet she nicked at 14? Jeered on by her friends?
There are many factors here.
System is a joke and they 'may' miss a qualified worker because of it.
On another note, get a differet job paying a better wage.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Hardly. On sky news many months ago a woman was caught taking pictures of nursery kids and selling it to perverts remember?
Knowing this sexist industry they prob didn't bother to check her mickey mouse record.
There's catching druggies, murderers, rapists and then there is downright thick, such a case as this.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Usually this sort of policy is down to getting the student placements, not down to filling the course or not.
You need a placement to pass, as the work experience is part of the course.
Not many nurseries will take on anyone with a mark on the crb, it's just not worth the risk.
Even if it's not related to the student, if anything happens at the time they are in, they have to justify why they were employing them.
Even something "stupid" like shoplifting, do you tell all the staff and parents, or do you let them leave their handbags and money around still? Then what happens if somnething does go missing? Even on the students day off, it still sticks.
The college usually has to work hard to get placements in the first place, so they just take the easy route.0 -

Or was it a car or housebreaking? vaporate, none of us know the story so making assumptions and minimising or amplifying the situation is pointless.
to the OP, is there no other colleges near you that may have a more flexible policy? If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -

A girl at 14 nicking a car or illegally entering a house?
Highly unlikely.
I would wager stealing something in a shop.
OP, I would just apply to lesser Draconian college if one exists.
Seek legal advice too as I bet there are thousands ofsuch situations like this from petty 'offences'.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
In Scotland to have to have an enhanced disclousure check and have 2 references which have been checked before you can be employed. When the Care Commision carry out their annual inspections of the settings they will ask to see this. Something like shop lifting wouldn't be considered to be a conviction where you would be concerned about a childs safety, something like assault etc would. In Scotland anyone working within childcare will have to register with the SSSC. They also have to have to be qualified in childcare. To register with the SSSC you have to have an enhanced disclourse check. I assess workers in the workplace towards their SVQ (NVQ) Levels 2,3,4. If the college won't train her because of her minor conviction, it may be possible for her to gain employment and do her qualification in the workplace.
I also teach childcare in schools. I am constantly reminding the young people I teach of the possible implications of their actions and why they need to be very careful and not get into trouble which could find them with a criminal record as it could affect their choice of career.:rotfl: l love this site!! :rotfl:0
