If you have signed with a doorstep salesman, it is absolutely certain that there are cheaper tariffs available - even with the same company.

Look at the link provided by espresso above; you probably have a cooling off period to get out of the doorstep sale.

Thanks Cardew, I have signed up with the salesman from the same company as all of the comparison sites told me was the cheapest. And I have got cheapest rate as well.

Thanks for the condisending tone, for your info I did check the comparison sites and the salesman was from the same company that all the comparison sites said was my cheapest supplier. As for cashback I missed out this time but I do use cashback for everything else I purchase.

It is not simply the supplier, it is the tariff that is all important and most energy companies have a multitude of different tariffs to confuse the consumer.

Did you actually choose your new tariff yourself or did the door to door [STRIKE]spiv[/STRIKE] salesman choose it for you?

Do you think that they put you on the best tariff for your requirements or the one that pays them the most commission for the new business?

If you are so sure that you have signed up for the best deal, post your figures (annual consumption in kWh, region, supplier and exact tariff) then you will see if it is just your bananas that are green.

I'm guessing the OP is currently checking the comparison sites to ensure the supplier and tariff details they will claim to be now on is the one that is currently the cheapest option... ;)

    Course you did dear. ;)

I too never go to the door without my laptop in hand open on an energy comparison website page just in case it's an energy salesperson wanting to sign me up to some plan or other on the doorstep ...

Edit: Looks like this poster has had a recent spate of asking [STRIKE]silly[/STRIKE] questions they would like answering

I'm always amused at the guys who come a-calling touting for custom. They don't even have a price list with them. I used to have one company would come every few months pretending that they were there to sort out my 'problem'. Of course I didn't have a problem with their company because I wasn't with them but I guess they have to change tactics with the times.

I'm sorry if my questions on this forum are silly to some people. This one is an honest question.

I don't answer my door with laptop in hand, what happened was the spiv came round during my lunchbreak and we made an appointment for the following evening. In the meantime I checked what he had briefly told me by going on line and fortunately for him (and me I suppose) he had told me everything that agreed with the suppliers website. It was the salesman that suggested going to the CAB to see if we could claim anything back for being on the wrong tariff, I thought it would be easier and more friendly to come on here and ask the stupid question instead.

I admit I didn't hold out a lot of hope in being able to get anything back at all, but you do hear of these things being possible.

I am truly sorry if I have wasted anyone's time with this question - on the other hand if I have brightened your day with this question I am glad.

ESPRESSO - Currently I am with Scottish Power on Capped for Free Online tariff. According to their most recent bill I have used 8764 Kwh Gas and 9120 kwh Electric over the last 12 months. I live in Norfolk.

I really do appreciate peopls thoughts and comments on this.:)

wow, mid range gas useage but somewhere between double and triple what I'd expect to be 'typical' electrical useage? if there is no obvious explanation for that might be worth looking into (some form of electric heating stuck on that could/should be on a timer?)

using an NR6 norfolk postcode best buy I get on uswitch is £1028 with Npower or £1038 with eon if you can't stand dealing with Npower's customer service dept....

however if you get to the bottom of your sky high electricity useage the best deal may well change

Hi Jasx - I thought it seemed a bit high when I typed the figures in, we have gas central heating. Two bed house, 2 adults 2 kids. nothing that uses a huge amount of electric that I can think of, although power shower does frequently get left on when not in use. And stuff does get left on stanby over night so that probably why its such a high useage.

OP, as well as changing tariffs, you really need to address your electricity usage as an urgent priority, as 9,120KWh pa in a 2 b/r property with gas CH is more than double what it should be. A few items left on standby overnight is not going to account for that. Have you got a backup immersion heater left on maybe?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
