Network drive

Thats exactly what i thought, the Netgear Sc101 comes with software that requires it for setup. But the software is not compatible with windows 7 64bit.
I dont see why all this has to be done as my other eaby NAs drive was so easy to setup. Just plug it into the router and it automatically asighns an IP to it. This was so easy.
Seems like the Netgear is so much more complicated.
ISPs and routers are the archetypal culprits here - they want you to get into a sever mess if ever you try to leave the ISP. Never ever install vendor's software on your computer to access NETWORK CONNECTED devices.
So, for you, uninstall their software, look at the manual and access the web interface on the storage device and set up from there. OK, you have to know a little bit about what you are doing, but it is a whole lot easier than using some vendor's software and trying to get support for it from internet forums. Plus[1], you can be sure that the techies will be doing it that way [no one with any experience bothers with vendors' rubbish software] and you are more likely to get help. Plus[2], once you get the general idea of getting onto the web config of any device, it works for all of them.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Thanks, i would actually prefer it if i can get it working without installing there software. The ebay NAS i had was so simple, i just connected it to the router and used there web interface.
But on the netgear sc101, there seems to be no web interface for it. Once connected to the router, how do i find the IP for it?
Here is the manual and there is no mention of a web interface, http://kbserver.netgear.com/pdf/sc101_manual_07SEP05.pdf0 -
Both should all be compatible with any Windows operating system from XP upwards, and with 32-bit or 64-bit variants.
There are real problems with quite a few NAS drives and Win 7 / VISTA. SC101 is one such example though there is a faff workround available.
I tried a DGM NAS caddy off ebay and couldn't make it work with Vista. It's perfect under XP.Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0 -

The ebay one that i got is a DGM, so maybe that explains that.
But what i dont understand is, the DGM i got is setup through the web interface so how come its not compatible with certian operating systems?0 -

Frankly, I couldn't be doing with this and I would put it in a skip. It ain't very :money: but then again being :money: starts with checking the specs to ensure that the kit id future proof. I note the pdf is dated sept 2005, so quite an old product. Firmware and manual updates?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Thanks. As you say, think the best solution is just to bin it.
So now I'm back to square one, can anyone recommended a good NAS enclosure?
Thanks0 -
Actually, WIN7 does have problems with NAS drives, it does not show them in network devices where you would normally see them,.
Eh? Network accessible drives have never shown up in Network Devices. Maybe this is additional functionality for devices supporting the new Vista/Win7 network protocols but its certainly not been a feature for the last two decades.0 -
