Dowel is a very thin rod of wood, usually available in places like B&Q. I think Hobbycraft also sell dowel in their dolls house section.

People usually cut the dowel to the height of the nappy cake and push right down the centre to keep it all together.

Thanks li'l_p I knew what a dowel was, well the small ones you get to build furniture :rotfl:but I couldn't understand where exactly it was placed, I would have thought all three tiers would slide off the base it was sitting on as nothing is holding the bottom tier to the base?? Guess I will not know until I physically sit down and make it
    :rotfl:

With the wee reindeer boxes I printed off and made from the net, if they get rain on them, it ruins the ink, is there anything that can be sprayed on to stop this happening? or will I jsst have to hope its dy on the day:)

    Aww, no probs!

A good suggestion for nappy cakes is to wrap the whole lot in cellophane pehaps to keep it all on the base board.

There's a whole thread devoted to nappy cakes so it might be worth checking that out as no doubt like this thread, it's full of hints and tips.

For sticking on tiny gems I use a Fine Tip Glue Applicator, filled with PVA glue. The nozzle is pin hole (0.5mm) so it dispenses the tiniest amount of glue. I got mine a few years back but a quick search has brought up the supplier named on the bottle I have:

    http://www.finetip.co.uk/buy-now.html

They are £3.25 to buy here but if you search around you may find one similar/cheaper - I don't want people to think I am promoting this site, I am just showing which product I use to help those that might find it useful.

That said, I'd highly recommend having one as I use mine all the time, and PVA glue is really cheap and goes a long way, so you'll get your mileage out of it. I use mine for gluing small dies cuts too; things like the quickutz shapes which can have small or thin pieces.

Ooooh i have one of those it's fab i've been wondering if to get a spare i've had my other one at least 5 years . I'd be lost without it i use it with anitas tacky glue in for sticking my gems down. Also great for anything small and fiddly.

A tip for these, if ever the nozzle gets clogged (like if you leave the pin stopper out!): Pour some boiling water in a mug, pop in the metal tip end and the glue just melts away.

How do you keep them tiers together, I have bought all of the things to make a nappy cake as my cousin was due yesterday  but I wanted to wait until she had baby so I could top it off with pink/blue teddy & ribbon, I have saw a few saying using dowels but I must be dim as I have no idea what they mean??? TIA x
once ive made them up and stacked them on top of each other i wrap with cellophane and that keeps it all in place, they sit pretty sturdy TBH, i tend to swirl my nappies instead of rolling and the tiers sit on top very neatly :)
