Hi, This is probably a silly question but here goes anyway

My mother in law needs a new tv, have found her a good deal but the tv has integrated freeview, when we have tried to use a set top box in her house the reception was appalling so we plan to either get her to upgrade arial or get sky/free sat or the like, now to the question, will the new tv be able to receive the analogue signal and display ok or will it only display the poor signal freeview version?

Should be able to do both - or at least other such TVs I've seen can do both.

Nearly all tvs still show an analogue signal. However, no matter where you live in the uk, analogue will be switched off within the next few years (Mines already off)
So either get the aerial sorted, or get virgin/sky

There are a lot of people who have problems getting Freeview, however, those problems normally disappear when the transmitter goes fully-digital as the signal strength increases ten-fold.

  • When you tune the TV it will first go through the digital stations then the analogue. As to whether it is worth getting an aerial upgrade the first place to check would be the freeview site, put the postcode in and they will tell you if she can get it. There is a lot more useful information on there too.

1jim - bottom line, you'll need to upgrade her aerial at some point, why not do it now? You might want to check with her neighbours how their reception is before wasting your money if you're in an area with poor reception.
  • All TVs are both Analogue and Digital compatible. Try an aerial booster - that could help!

I agree, wait until the transmitter goes fully digital. My digital signal was terrible until the analogue signal was switched off, now I get a great picture with a set top aerial

What makes you say that I have a good high gain aerial still can't get freeview.

Not sure what your question is but his advice was sound

If somones in a bad area for reception (Ie, no matter what you do your going to have a bad signal), then spending money on a new aerial (or having it reset or whatever) is pointless

Thanks for the advice guys, she can get analgue perfetly, tried freeview sometime ago and it was awful, analgue gets turned off in a years time so didnt really want to see her paying out for a new aerial if she could get away without it as Im aware the signal gets boosted for digital when analgue gets turned off. She is quite happy with 5 normal channels so its good to know that she will be able to pick these up.
Was over there today and noticed she has an old sky dish (digital one) that she hadnt mentioned (never really thought to look at the top of the back of her house before), I think we have an old freesat box in the garage somewhere so will dig this out and give it a try....problem solved if it works
