Out of the contract into the fire! (New Orange contract question)

So after being screwed over by O2 on a contract, and then by Vodafone on contract (which I just got out of) like a moron I wandered into Phones4U and signed up for a 24 month contract with Orange.
I got the HTC Wildfire with it, which has a slight defect in the display and is being replaced tomorrow, and have so far found it to be horrible.
My main issue however is that most of my calls and texts are not coming through.
I'm not sure if this is down to the phone or the network but to be honest I'm not really interested in either anymore and would much prefer to settle with a PAYG £20 Nokia.
Does anyone have any tips or advice for getting out of this if at all possible? I'd even be happy to drop to just a bare minimum tariff if it is not possible to back out completely.
So far Phones4U don't seem that interested in helping (and why would they?).
Thanks for any advice.

When did you get the HTC desire?
As far as im aware, Phones4u dont have a cooling off period for contract phones.0 -
I got it on Sunday, meant to mention this.

I have just noticed that the bank details they have recorded are not accurate. Is this any use to me?0
