  • i was made redundant last yr so u have my sympathy. I used to work from home sitting at a pc all day and had to have the heating on as i couldnt type (hands just too cold) otherwise. Im actually enjoying having to go out to work this yr though!

I am still holding out for 1st November, but I must admit I wavered yesterday,it was very cold here.

It's forecast to turn noticeably nippier next week I'm afraid.

OH is busy dusting out where we have to light the heating and then is going to test it.
As it is forcast to be cold next week, we are going to set it on the timer for 3 hours each morning and 3 hours in the late afternoon and set the thermostat to about 18.
Will see how it goes and may adjust the timer etc, if necessary.

We put our heat on about a week ago. Its on timer and comes on approx 6.30-8.30 am and then on again at 4.00pm and is on all evening.

Ours is a very light house with BIG windows and it really gets the sun (if there's any about!) and friends are always asking how I keep it so warm.

The first house we ever had faced the wrong way and just one room and the very bottom of the garden ever saw the sun. BIG lesson learned there .... always check position of house/garden. My riend has a little cottage with weeny windows and not one room in there gets any sun, it is bitterly cold all the time.

We had all new loft insulation about 2 years ago and also cavity wall insulation and we are completely double-glazed.

I am holding off wearing socks or tights until 1st November though! Feet haven't been cold outside once!;)

just a note re boiler pressure. Our boiler has a dial and a pointer. The dial is red to the left and right and a green arc in the middle and the pointer should stay within the green arc. It was below so I simply turned on the tap below the boiler and heard the water topping up the system. I then left it to heat up the rads. I then made sure all the rads were bled. When ch temp had been reached then I looked at the dial and the pointer was just reaching into the red on the right, so I bled the cloakroom rad into a bowl so that the pressure was reduced back into the green. It is just a matter of water in or out

Easy, although my dh now says that he hopes he `pops his clogs` before me as he would never cope
  • I think we have found the reason why the house is so cold - a BIRD was flying around at 7 this morning!

It was only a blue tit (I managed to let it out of the window and saw its colours as it flew past) but I am baffled as to how it got in - there were no windows or doors open, we don't have a chimney and we don't have cats. Am now worried there is a big hole somewhere which we can't find.

Had to put heating on for about an hour. Husband has been in bed all day and has been sick. So wanted to take the chill off the bedroom.

Back off again and see how husband is later.

  • I haven't put the heating on to come on automatically yet, but I have put it on a few times for an hour at a time over the last two weeks.

This morning I was chilly when I got up, I put the heating on and was then too hot after about 20 minutes:rotfl:

I am studying at home with the OU, and I sometimes get cold because I am just sitting still - if my hands are too cold to type or hold a pen, then it's time to put the heating on!

I'm another who doesn't 'choose' to be cold. I live on my own on the basic pension, I recently got a letter from my fuel provider informing me my gas is going up 29% and my elec 19%. I daren't turn the heating on  ! Coming here and joining in with all the other posts makes me feel less alone...oh, I know there are some a heck of a lot worse of than me, some who don't have computers to keep in touch with MSE to learn how to keep warm, and I'm very grateful for what I have but I don't intend to waste heating on myself when I have many more interesting things to spend my money on. Why, only yesterday I went to Mr A and bought food!

Seriously, what sort of Grandma/daughter would I be if I didn't buy my DGD a couple of driving lessons for her upcoming birthday, or the extra little stocking treats I get my 3 DGC at Christmas, or take my dear 87 y/o mum on cheapy Sun holidays a couple of times a year  ? These small things give me just as much pleasure as they do the recipients. It's all about free choice, about prioritising as I feel necessary, seeing to the important things first and the boring essentials second.

By the way I have a couple of paper thermometers sent to my by Age Concern (thanks to MSE Freebie forum)which give a rough indication of the room temp. The one in my bedroom says 17-20c 'Cool, turn up your heating'. Not on your nelly! I'd be running around in my undies if it was any warmer, and I'd get arrested for scaring the natives!:rotfl:
