  • I have given in, wasn't going to have the heating on until the 1st November but we have put it on as it was so cold last night (had to de-ice my car this morning !!) to be honest I am pleased I have put the heating on now as I was begining not to like living in my house with it being so cold all the time, I am now back in love with our little house and to walk into the bathroom this morning and it to be warm was fantastic.

Anyone got any good ideas to stop DS(16) from turning on the heating in the morning before anyone else is up please? He turns it down again before he leaves but the rads are still hot and then when the sun comes up it gets really warm in the house - makes me mad.

I fined him £4 last month for doing it but feel harsh doing that again... or is it fair?

What time does he get up and what time have you got the heating set to come on? Is he actually turning the heating on or is he fiddling with the stat and raising the temperature?

Where are your heating controls? Ours (OFF/CONSTANT/TIMED and the time clock) are in the airing cupboard and if this was happening in my home, I'd be tempted to put a lock on the cupboard door;)

Seriously though, I think you need to ask him why he feels the need to do this (yes, he will probably tell you that he is FREEZING). At 16, he is old enough to learn how much it costs to heat the house especially during the autumn and winter quarters. I would try discussing the issue calmly and dispassionately with him - explaining why you don't want him to do it, ask him why he is doing it and see if there is some middle ground that you can agree on.

And no, I don't think fining him was harsh but then I'm over fifty (and well on my way to grumpy old womanhood LOL) - the only thing I'd say is that it obviously didn't work - presumably he felt that it was worth £4.00 as he is continuing to heat up the house in the morning.

What time does he get up? Three days a week I get up at 5am and to be honest it is cold at that time! This morning I got up at 8am and it was so much warmer. Maybe he does genuinely need the heating on at that time of the morning. I've resisted turning out on yet, but probably will soon on my early mornings. At the moment I am wrapping myself up in a dressing gown and blanket as I get ready for work.

I think if he is happy to pay £4 or whatever to have the heating on then let him! He's the only one benefitting from it so why not let him pay for it?

I had details of this in an email this morning, has anyone tried it?

    http://www.gizoo.co.uk/Products/EcoFriendly/EnergySaving/RadiatorBooster.htm

It was a winning idea on Dragon's Den apparently.

I was offered it for £14.95 because I signed up to receive regular offers from Gizoo, although I haven't ordered anything from them yet.

Still holding on..in fact today is easy as it's beautiful, warm, sunny with just a slight breeze, got lots of bedding/curtains/nets dry on the line. I don't have a tumble dryer (wouldn't have one even when I was in a flat, horrid things  ) so it's nice to have the back door open as usual and be able to go in and out collecting air-dried laundry.

It was chilly last evening but my new sofa throws arrived yesterday they're much softer and cosier than my 15-year-old ones so pulled one over me and was all warm and toasty :D .

Just going to catch the late afternoon sun and do a bit of tidying up in the garden..well wrapped-up in my fleece, quilted weskit and furry wellies of course!

Not looking forward to the weekend when the clocks go back, I think some of us might weaken then :o

I had been hoping to leave it until November 1st but today am off work. My little house feels rather depressing and I reasoned that I need to test that the heating will be working for when I really need it. What a transformation it makes. I actually feel like doing something instead of sitting all huddled up in fleece jacket, boots, fleece cover etc.

Ours went on for 30mins this morning at 7 a.m. - only because I needed to be up early to get to a course. I don't think we have done badly - considering we both have health problems made worse by the cold.

We are still keeping it off at night, but using the wood-burner - still, that is costing us nothing since the wood has been obtained from various sources after posting on this forum for ideas.

I had to put both bars on the little halogen heater this morning.
It was freezing downstairs. I put it off once the front room had heated up.
The sun is shining but it is cold for me. I waited until this afternoon when the sun had been shining on the bathroom window, before going for a bath. It was like Siberia in there first thing this morning.
