Benefits for 19 year old son?

He has applied for a couple, the one was working in Mcdonalds where he goes to college, they wanted him to work till 11 at night which wasn't practical..
Why not? He drives so he can get home. He won't be starting College til gone 9 so won't need to be up til 7.30 so there's plenty of time to get some sleep in.0 -

My thoughts exactly, your not telling me he's usually tucked up in bed before 11 at night. There's always Saturdays and Sundays too, plenty of scope for working a good few hours, and shops will be taking on extra Christmas staff now as well.0 -
My 19 year old worked in McDonalds until 11.p.m. whilst at college - as she had her car, she could get herself home safely - and in any case it was only 3 evenings a week. When she went out with friends at the weekend, it was hell on earth to get her to agree to a curfew of midnight! So the 11pm finish is, frankly, a bit weak!
If he wants his mobile phone, extra petrol, clothes, etc he should have been working for the money for at least the last year, imo!!0 -

Totally agree. My friends 16 years old works at McDonalds two shifts during the week and one shift at the weekend. It pays for his clothes, books, nights out etc and he is able to get up for college. His mum receives CB and she uses that for his food. Nineteen seems a bit old to expect everyone else to pay for him still??0 -
Hi - would say that he should have had piles of forms back in sprung about grants etc - but they are assessed on the family's income.
If they don't qualify that way the only other way is for him to work to get extra I would think - but I'm no expert.
If the income too high for assistance they assume the parents can afford to finance the dependant.Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day. -- Sally Koch0 -
He has taken the job in McDonalds but its a 50 mile round trip and awful country roads so may not be practical in winter (they also want him to work until 1am) and not likely to bring much profit. Not sure when he will actual get paid so she is still covering all expenses at present.
No child benefit as he is nearly 20 and only started college a few weeks ago (he was travelling between school and now) and tax credit told her yesterday -no nothing.
Limited public transport in our area so his car is essential. He had to purchase equipment (tools) for his course so this month alone she has paid around £200 for college, £100 for his car insurance payment, £40 petrol and of course all his food, living expenses etc.
Guess he can't get JSA or income support as in full time education but sis is expected to provide for him.Visit beautiful Mid Wales:j0 -
Simple - he'll be paid either weekly or monthly. I live in the middle of a rural county with a range of hills and we manage to get around OK in winter. There's maybe been a couple of days in the last one where it was a bit bad. So yes, it is practical in winter. I notice your signature says "Welcome to mid Wales" so I assume that's roughly the area you live? For the winters of 2005-08, I used to do a delivery at Minsterley then over to Welshpool then Llandidrod Wells and down to Newport - as you know most of it on quite small A roads. Never really had any issues and that was in a 44 tonne wagon. He has taken the job in McDonalds but its a 50 mile round trip and awful country roads so may not be practical in winter (they also want him to work until 1am) and not likely to bring much profit. When I worked in McDonalds (admittedly a long while ago
) we got paid fortnightly so he might not have long to wait.
It's only a game

She has saved, but its surprising how fast it gets spent when your paying out like she is... I'm hoping he will find a weekend job nearer to home, but no joy yet.. I am nagging him!:jVisit beautiful Mid Wales:j0
