Benefits for 19 year old son?

Just a quick query, is there any help available whilst a 19year old son goes to college? My sister and her husband both work, and have 2 young children... she also has a 19 year old son living at home, and currently travelling to college every day. She is at present financing him, and we wondered if he could claim anything? She is struggling to cover all his expenses.:)

  • Maybe she could ask her son to get a part time job if possible to help cover his expenses.

I don't think there is a large fee for college, its everything else... He has a car to drive the 25 miles to get there, also he needs odd bits of money for his phone etc, she doesn't pay for him to go out at all, but he still manages to cost money. I know he can't get jSA as he's not looking for a job... just wondered if there was anything else.

He has applied for a couple, the one was working in Mcdonalds where he goes to college, they wanted him to work till 11 at night which wasn't practical..

My 19 year old qualifies for EMA as he was still 18 on 31/8 -otherwise he'd have qualified for another form of funding ALG.

  • If he's under 20 his parents will still receive child benefit and child tax credit for him, that should cover his expenses.

If they have a decent income they might not get tax credits but everyone gets child benefit.
