EDF Eco Manager

Hi,

i've seen the adverts for EDF's new ECO Manager where you get a wireless device that can turn all your gadgets and gizmo's off at the press of a button from your bed. It looks like a good idea and its free to sign up for if you are an existing customer.

However when you sign up it says that you will be switched over to their standard tariff. Does this mean the cost of my fuel will go up?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Matt, i saw the advert too tonight, and thought wow that's really good, and yeah if your on a internet tariff at the moment with them, it means reverting onto the standard tariff with them, which is more expensive.

I agree the eco-manager looks like a handy device to save on electricity.

Is there a way of getting such a device but without joining edf at all.

Ie buy the device as single purchase.
  • It's for sale on the EDF website. £79 I think. Check for yourself, don't rely on my memory.

If you have to switch to the standard tariff over the most competitive web tariff, then any savings you might make in consumption will be wiped out by the much higher unit cost.
Choose the cheapest provider and the cheapest tariff and don't be swayed by any gimmicky extras. If you think the device will save you more than £79, then buy it instead.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Search for anything to do with home automation with the X10 technology and over time you can turn everything on or off with a press of a button. The benefit outweighs the savings in power though, so think of it as a long term investment. Or do as i do, switch everything off when not in use, for rooms that kids are in i just stuck timers on TV's etc so if they leave them on and fall asleep they switch off at a certain time.
  • I was looking at this, I was looking through the terms and they just seem to state that you have to remain with EDF energy for 12 months, it doesn't say you have to remain on the standard tariff for 12 months, so I was wondering if you could sign up, get this then just switch to one of EDF energy's cheaper tariffs?

I am guessing they are hoping people will sign up and switch but not switch back so they can make more money back?

    Can anyone confirm this?

You might want to check out treegreen.net, they sell a device called the energy egg that switches off your appliances when they aren't being used. Has a button on it too so you can switch it off yourself, quite handy, and cheaper than ecomanager I think.

I like the idea of having complete control over all the appliances in your home, I live on my own and am quite energy conscious, but could still save a fortune :)

The link to the EDF shop to buy the Eco Manager and other economical products:

  • I'm just sending my Ecomanager unit back as without the whole house option (additional £14 or so) you can't monitor the whole house unless the individual transmitter plugs can 'see' the central controller. Also the display has stopped functioning since a power cut. To give EDF their due they were pleasant on the phone and haven't quibbled about refunding me (hope this holds up). Since arranging to send it back, I've had a letter recalling the units as there is a risk of the transmitter plugs overheating if placed under excessive load when in use due to a 'possible issue' with a component. I've noticed they've since taken the Ecomanager off their online shop.
