Buy a hideous, grey, indestructible canvas bag like this one. That'll teach him to wreck the "trendy" one you bought him...
We all used to use them at school..... you had to wash it as soon as you got it to soften it up, then got all your mates to sign it, then you'd draw a heart with your loved one's initials in it... then maybe an ac/dc or Kiss logo on it.... he might start a trend with one of those.:DMember of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Have to say my first reaction was something similar to that - we all used to use the backpack version. As I recall there were two sizes - one a direct equivalent of the one above, and a bigger one which was ideal when you had to get games kit, text books and packed lunch in one bag. I had one that lasted me most of the 7 years of senior school - they were near enough indestructible as the only thing that gave up on them occasionally was the stitching on the strap fixings - but because of the material it could be stitched back on and you'd have it as good as new.
This is one similar - http://www.mashedarmysurplus.co.uk/bags-rucksacks/canvas-backpack-rucksack-/prod_175.html - I'd almost challenge him to wreck this one!
(As above the trend in our day was for the cool kids to paint the lid/flap often with rock band logos which apart from personalising them also had the side benefit of increasing the waterproofing - not that it was really needed as it takes a long time for rain to soak through one of these and if you really want to you can put some tent waterproofer on it)Adventure before Dementia!0 -
I love the army surplus suggestions. For next schoolyear I will buy my son one.
With 5 children I don't really spend a fortune on schoolbags ever. If I see cheap bags I stock up and so far my three boys are still carrying the bags I bought them in May. They were just cheapy Clark shoe shop ones. Usually they get a new schoolbag round Christmas or January when they are in sale again. If they want one that is trendy or more than 15 pounds they can save up for it themselves and do more chores.
My DD2 started this year in secondary. She is infamous with looking after her stuff. I bought her a Jeep Black bag (£15)that is holding up fine so far. It has three ways of carrying and two sturdy handles.I never realized how much personal info is out there that can be used and abused to suit every purpose.0 -

I had one of those too in the mid-80s...mine was a lovely mustardy colour - we all had them;) You wrote your name on the shoulder bit (in bubble writing!) and mine had Duran Duran and A-ha all over it....along with 'so-and-so loves so-and-so'.
Brilliant....that's made me smile this afternoon:)I really need to sort out a new signature!0 -
