Russ.....sorry mate-my comments were meant to be a bit more tongue-in-cheek (!!)
Did not mean to offend! (Now-wheres my whisky!)
Kind regards,

If I didn't believe it was cheaper to go through an independent before I certainly do now since Travelman saved me a fortune on the family summer holiday today. he not only beat the best price I found on the net he found me a better holiday even cheaper still and it's all protected into the bargain.
thanks Chris0 -
Hello Chris,
You didn't offend me at all. It’s just a bit of harmless fun; I’m just hacked off because I’m on call this weekend as all my staff went to Amsterdam for two days of booze and debauchery.
And all my friends have gone to the pub, and I have got to sit here sober, as my wife drinks all my single malt.
It’s a pity Comets closed I could while away the hours tormenting the sales staff with:
“What do you mean I don’t get a discount for cash go and get the Manager”As tight as two coats of paint0 -
Hi there,
Just to clarify this, there isn't a problem with Nobby's post here as he doesn't have a connection with the site he recommended, in fact he didn't even post the contact details until he was asked. As you say, the whole point of the site is finding the best bargains for everyone.
As Nobby also says, Travelman (and others) seem to have helped others make substantial savings in the past. The point is that you can't recommend yourself as it could be concieved as a biased viewpoint. The rules clearly state that you are not allowed to advertise on the site for personal gain and this must be adhired to. If a site/individual is recommended by others because they have found them the best deal in the past, that is fine, indeed thats the whole concept of the forum.
Hope that helps a bit.0 -
Went to Croatia as an "independent" traveller last year because it was SO expensive to do it any other way.
Dubrovnik has a definite wow factor - and it's still not too expensive. If you are up for some travelling then cities like Split, with a very unusual and atmospheric old town, are easily accessible by bus.
The islands and beaches are the most beautiful I have ever seen. It doesn't cost anything to swim in the waters of the Adriatiac, and what the guidebooks say IS true - the water is the clearest I have ever seen, and still warm when I went at the end of September! If you aren't staying in a beach resort think about finding accomodation for the night as you will want to spend the whole day there.
To access the Northern part of the country, including the magnificent Plitvice Lakes National Park, I found it was relatively easy to find cheap car hire on the internet. A warning though - carry your driving licence - I got stopped by the Croatian police and I thought they were going to arrest me for not having my licence!
As flights can be expensive direct to Croatia, if you want a really independent holiday for the best price, I found it cheapest (and quite fun!) to fly to Bari in Italy with Ryanair and catch an overnight ferry to Dubrovnik. I then worked my way up the country and flew back from Trieste in Northern Italy. Apart from saving money, it injected my holiday with a sense of adventure. Although there really isn't much to do in Bari (all the shops were shut on Monday mornings) Trieste is quite a hidden treat - with some fantastic shops, great Italian restaurants, trendy bars,a port, and a castle.
Hope this gives you some inspiration to try Croatia while it is still reasonably cheap :-)0 -
I was planning to go to Croatia this summer. Possibly late June / early July. However I have found the package deals to be quite expensive. Looking for 2 Adults + 2 Children, Half board, from any Scottish or Northern English airports. Anyone recommend where to look for good value ?
Cheers

Try posting a request on the following Thread but remember to give the childrens ages, a rough budget and the type of accommodations you're looking for.0 -
Kellm have PM'D you. Is it 1 or 2 weeks you want?

Finishrich,
Thanks for the link. I hadn't spotted the other board. Very useful.
Travelman,
Have pm'd you. Thanks0 -
I travelled extensively around Croatia in the mid to late 90’s i.e. towards and after the “War” and it’s a great place. However (obviously) when I was travelling there were very few tourists and it was cheap. I notice that a room at the Hotel Argentina in Dubrovnik now costs more than three times the price I paid when I last stayed there in July 1999 and there’s now too many bloody tourists!
Last year I decided to try the Montenegrin cost which is below Croatia and starts just over an hours drive south of Dubrovnik. The coastline (and interior) of Montenegro is absolutely stunning. When I went there I flew to Belgrade, and spent a couple of days there before flying down to Tivat in Montenegro. However – If you want to fly down direct JAT have a once a week flight from Heathrow to Tivat which last year they were charging £129 return!0
