Xmas for a one year old

It is our first Xmas with our LO :j

I am in no doubt that he will get lots of gifts from other people.

What did you purchase for your LO's first Xmas and how much did you spend? I am thinking that buying little gifts won't last that long!

How did you distribute gifts. I know some friends who gave one gift leading up to and after Xmas so LO might appreciate each gift? Thought that was a cool idea?

Any thoughts please?

With my kids they got clothes and some toys for early birthdays and christmases. It's the unwrapping and playing they enjoy at that age, you could wrap up a load of empty boxes and they'd be just as happy.
  • Hi my Lo will be 10 months at christmas and although it might seem tight i am only planning on buying a few things , as i will probably also let him "unwrap" mine and my husbands too .
As i know he will get loads from the rest of the family, i am going to put some extra money in to his bak account instead of buying him too many things.

Very wise Pinkparrot. At 10 months your child knows nothing about Christmas and the present opening will just be a fun time. Kids love playing in boxes and peek a boo with the paper. Enjoy! ;)

    Thanks so far-good replies.

yes am thinking of wrapping a huge cardboard box with all the things he loves

    remote control
    egg box
    plastic bottle
    wire
    plasic wrapper
    paper tissues

    etc etc.

Think he will love un-wrapping our gifts so that's a thought

Love the bank account idea, but have just thought we could make a charity donation or buy a few toys for a hospital?

Just brought stuff they would need (plates, cups etc) and wrapped everything seperatly - lots of pressies, lots of paper. Though to be honest baby one just wanted to play with the first thing she had opened. Last year for baby two's first christmas we did the same, but the poor little devil didn't get a chance to open anything as his big sister did it all for him!

my LO will be 9months and she's getting a wheelybug which is a sit on wheeled toy. It cost about £40 and goes up to age 3. We've got a lot of cast off toys so are getting something rather indulgent really but up til now most of her things from nappies to clothes to toys have been second hand/boot sales/charity shops. Her other larger present came from a charity shop for £2. Its a Fisher Price thing that involves pushing balls down a spiral and noise. Will probably be a 5 minute wonder but for £2 I don't mind. She doesn't care if its new or old so i may as well save when and where I can especially when I have a 7yo who needs a DS and infinate Dr Who stuff apparantly as he's the ONLY one in school who doesn't have them:rotfl:

TBH I'm expecting her to be more interested in the lights and baubles on the christmas tree or shiny sweet wrappers and the discarded wrapping paper or the extra food that she might be able to snaffle

My DS was six weeks old at his first Christmas, he got a set of teething ring "keys" because he liked to grab our keys. He fell asleep during the present opening part of the day and lay awake all night, bless he is 21 soon LOL.

We used to buy ahead for things they'd need in the following year or so if we found things on offer. DS is now 3 and went into a single bed this year, but my parents found two duvet cover sets on offer they knew he'd love so they got them last year for him and we put them away. He loved unwrapping them because they were Bob the builder and Thomas ones but they're only just coming into use now.

With my DD's they were sharing a bedroom so we bought things for their room, lightshade, clock etc, they liked to unwrap things with characters they liked but they were practical presents too.

I went daft for my dd's first xmas, looking back now it's embarrasing, she was 6 weeks old for goodness sake!! An absolutely pointless waste of money.
Like Mrs B said buy the baba things he is gonna need anyway (bedding, clothing etc) and maybe one or two toys, thats plenty. Putting money into a bank account is also a great idea, you could possibly ask family to contribute to this too, instead of buying toys.

My son was 4 months last Xmas, bit more aware this year but not much to be honest. Last year (and we have already done much the same this year & plan to keep this up) we bought him
A bottle of port to lay down for when he's older
A sworvorski (sp?) limited edition Xmas decoration. not cheap at £40+ each but will build into a lovely & valuable collection for him.
Adopted an animal & got a cuddly toy of said animal which he plays with in his cot, have kept adoption certificate for him (along with records of other chairty donations on his behalf). If you go through the David Shepherd orginisation you also geta fab David Shepherd print of your chosen animal, this is now framed on his bedroom wall.
A childs stool (with a snail on it, bought from Oxfam's fairtrade range)
    A singing teddy from ELC.

We didn''t wrap most of it up as he was totally incapable of unwrapping it, some we popped a bow around or slid into a (reusable) gift bag for effect but that was all. We just arrnaged it nicely under the tree/around him for photos!

Basically we let everyone else in the family go nuts (and to be honest waste their money somewhat), we bought long lasting stuff. We plan to make a chairty donation every year at Xmas & on his birthday on his behalf, we want him to know that these occasions aren't just about consummerisum, although judging by the stacks of presents everyone else bought him last year we could have an uphill battle!

For his birthday this year we asked everyone to buy him Duplo, he isn't ready for it yet but he will gorw into it & it builds into a nice set & is easy to store in the mean time! Maybe something like this which everyone can buy a contributuion torwards would work? we tried asking people for the money last Xmas but no-one listened to us, I think they enjoyed trying out all the toys!
