I noticed in the other thread, SarEl, that you refused to answer whether you worked in the public sector or not. The more you post on pay issues like this and the other thread, the more I'm convinced you are. You lot are going to be getting a very rude awakening of what the real employment world is like when you all get laid off. No longer are you going to have the ability to shout "rights" at every little thing, you're going to find lots of people doing the same job on different money and you're no longer going to be basically unsackable.
The rest of us already in the real world are going to find all the handwringing done by former public sector workers highly entertaining.
Actually, most people with the capacity to think beyond rabble-rousing headlines and sound bites understand that prolonged and severe public sector cuts will have a negative effect on the infrastructure of the country and it's economy.
Friends from the public sector who have left recently have generally found very similar work in the private sector within a week or two. The only real difference has been that the salary is between 1.5 and 4 times that of the public sector. Most of us are highly professional, committed and hard-working. I applied for a job which had a salary band, within which you could earn wage a,b,c or d. Because I was already on a c scale, I was offered the post on a d.
Some people who had been doing the job much longer than me were doing it on an a or b (because they had come in to the job at a lower rate).
We were not being paid 'differently' as it was within the same salary band. The actual wages within the band DID differ.
This was in the Public sector.
Maybe it could be something like this in the OP's case?(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
i agree with the first person to reply to you.
you were employed 8 years ago and al jobs wages were different 8 years ago.You can expect with your boss to review your job via continuous professional development plan I.e what you are achieving,to achieve, improve your worth to the job i.e education, courses. On the basis of your cpd the employer may see your due for a salary increase or you may have already be at the top of your band .
secondly you can apply for another job elsewhere or at least find out the requirements and whether you are likely to be accepted for interview. This can help to see if you need to brush up on any skills and motivate you to get more out of your life.up to the time you found this document were you happy with the pay, conditions of employment.if yes then are you prepared to change just for more pay and obviously more tax.
do not be grudge the person for more pay.it happens to all of us.it is a matter of timing.
