Does a cheap ring look 'cheap'

My engagement ring is a yellow gold one with a lilac cz on it, we went shopping for rings and to be honest, it was the one the caught my eye and I really loved it.
It doesn't matter to me that it didn't cost a fortune, though my OH was a bit upset thinking that he was being a cheapskate getting it, but as I said to him, I love the ring, and that's what matters.
Plus its different, being a lovely lilac colour and if people want to think its Tanzanite, then I am not going to correct them
