Making cards - Ideas (part 5)

Mad Frog Carly has been using BSL since she was able to at a few months old but she did have a little hearing in one ear until she was about 1 year old. She did speak but unless you knew her well it could be hard to understand her . She had her cochlear implant op last january when she was 2 and a half as she had lost all her hearing by then . She was switched on in february and the sound levels have been adjusted regularly ever since. She is now encouraged to use speech to achieve a clearer speaking voice and her BSL and speech when she hasn't got her implants on. She can lip read really well and her speech and communication skills are catching up now. When she had her op she couldn't speak in sentences it was 2 or 3 words max . Now she talks the hind legs off a donkey. lol .
She had a wonderful teacher for the deaf from being 6 weeks old until she was nearly 2 when we moved . Here you only get a teacher for the deaf at school age but we have a lovely lady from the implant team at bradford who visits and advises on what we can do with carly to help her. She now knows all her animals ,colours and shapes all her numbers to 30 and is working on her alphabet . Not bad really for a child written off by her father and his family as she wasn't perfect.
my daughter ( carlys mum ) did a BSL course after carly was diagnosed at birth . It costs a fortune but was worth every penny as it has helped carly's progress enormously. Especially as she then taught the rest of us.
I'm going to sit and watch my oh and my son paint the kitchen today as i've got a new fridge freezer arriving tomorrow and i've insisted it needs doing today to save them having to move it again after its here lol.
Sun is coming out here. Hope everyone has a lovely day.Cross Stitch Challenge Member Number 20

Craftygranny Thank you, forgive me for being so nosey, Carly sounds like a little star, BSL is so hard isn't it?, I have forgotten so much (although I know jingle bells in BSL cause it was so much fun
)
All the people who had deaf people in the family passed BSL level two, those who didn't did not, obviously practise makes perfect there I suppose
I don't understand why she doesn't get help until she is school age? but what a clever little star she is... no wonder you are so proud of her
PS her father is a :mad: :mad:0 -
OAP - I wondered if the goodies on Crafty Ribbons were yours when I saw the name - thanks for confirmation I was right - they were lovely. Have you managed to get your carpet cleaned up OK?
Madfrog - Well Done on the BSL qualification - it fascinates me! I used to belong to a deaf social club - not the quiet place you'd imagine it to be! I worked with a fab young man who was profoundly deaf too. I'd love to learn it, I got one of the books they were offering on here a few weeks ago. Good Luck with your flooring hunt, my kitchen needs re-doing after a bit of a flood from the freezer just need some of those extra hours we talked about yesterday.......
Jowri - welcome back - glad your eye is getting better
