Can I just point out that several supermarkets sell fresh gravy - which is a total ripoff - but you can often find it reduced to pennies at the end of the day, and it freezes well?Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0

I used to enjoy the Sainsbury fresh chicken gravy. It seesm they have stopped doing it and now do poultry gravy instead which tastes awful.
Another awful one is Tesco fresh chicken gravy.0 -
In Delia's complete cookery course there is a recipe for gravy.
Finely chop an onion (or is it half), fry it in 1oz butter on med-high heat so that it softens and goes really brown and caramelised (but not burnt). Stir in 1oz flour and cook off for a bit (it makes a roux with the melted butter). Stir in 1/2 pt stock or water with 1tbsp mushroom ketchup and cook off for a bit. I can't actually remember if its 1pt or 1/2pt, so do 1/2pt and if its too thick add more stock/ water. I sometimes add a splash Lea and Perrins to give it a bit more oomph.
I also freeze some leftover as its always handy to have a bit of gravy about.
I have to say I hate the taste of bisto, chip shop gravy etc.0 -
Bought some black country faggots from the butcher this morning. Going to put them in the oven for tea. However I need some gravy. Is it possible to make some with Oxo cubes, onions, flour, concentrated beef bouleion, butter? Those are the only ingredients I can think of that I have that might work. I've never made gravy before so sorry if this sounds like a silly question.SIMPLE SIMON - Met a pie man going to the fair. Said Simple Simon to the pie man, "What have you got there?" Said the pie man unto Simon, "Pies, you simpleton!"0

Hi HappyIdiotTalk,
Those ingredients sound good to make a homemade gravy.
We have an older thread that should help you so I'll merge your thread with it to keep all the suggestions together.

There is a whole thread on gravy here http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=276005, including packet mixes and 'proper' gravy made using flour etc.
If you can make gravy you can cover a multitude of culinary sins!:D
I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...
I moved to Liverpool for a better life.
And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!0 -

Thanks Pink, I should have known there was already a thread on the topic. I was just worried I didn't have the right stuff in to make some. Seen some great suggestions in here though which I should be able to make.SIMPLE SIMON - Met a pie man going to the fair. Said Simple Simon to the pie man, "What have you got there?"
