A useful tip to save drivers money

Hi all - I'm a member of a car-share scheme and have just calculated that I'm saving not far off £900 a year.
Just wanted to share that as they are going big on it being the first ever Liftshare Week next week, and they want to urge more people to give it a try!
They don't make any money out of it, so I don't mind spreading the word.
Anyway I've found it brilliant. Two years sharing? £1,800 saved. If you're a driver on this forum, and not car-sharing, I reckon you need to ask yourself why!! :T

I asked myself and the answer was... Cos you work a mile down the road you berk!
I would take the horse into work however we don't have the grazing facilities.

How do you arrange car sharing when you start and finish at different times every day?

Need to carry stuff backwards and forwards, And sometimes dont get home at all?

For me it's because I don't work in an environment where the workforce starts and finishes the day in unison. Car sharing might be a go-er for shift bases employment, but I put in a non-fixed number of hours per week depending on workload and two peoples workload aren't likely to be well synced across individual projects for this type of travel logistics.

Also, and possibly more importantly, I am misanthropic and don't want the hassle of other people during a commute (this makes the bus a task and a half so I got a pair of noise isolating earphones for my ipod, can't even hear a screaming baby with those beauties in).
If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.
  • How are you saving £900 a year by giving your work mates a lift?

    Are you a taxi?

    Does your insurance know?

NOO! You pay a proportion of the fuel costs etc, which the website works out for you, if you're taking a lift, thus the driver doesn't make a profit out of it, its just a contribution towards the expense of the journey. This is fine according to Ombudsman guidelines.

If you can't take the horse, what about shanks pony.

£900 a year is a good headline figure but it translates to £17 a week - to have to share with other people and meet their schedule and make polite conversation.

Careful buying of the right car at the right price with the right fuel consumption level will easily save more than that.

    Sorry.

No need to apologise for decent money saving advice.

I am sure car sharing works for some people.

I have however yet to meet anyone for whom it does.
  • I'd have to drive 10 miles to pick up my workmate then another 10 miles to work. I work 8 miles from my house.
So he's 20 per day, I'm 16. One of us could do 40 miles (4 miles extra).
Not only would it not save money, it would also add 20 mins onto one of our journeys every day. Lifes too short.

Am I the only one who would rather not save £900 and come and go as I please in my own car?
