Have you ever got from the internet..?

Just a quick 'survey' type question..
Has anyone here ever actually got a job by applying via an internet based jobsite?

I've joined several 'Internet based' job sites..Reed.co.uk,Jobsite.co.uk etc..but despite several hopeful applications have not even had the courtesy of an acknowledgement.

Just wondering if anyone has had the good fortune of applying for and actually receiving a job offer from applying through one of their advertised vacancies?
Or am I on the right track in thinking that these sites just sell the information on by encouraging you to submit personal information/CV's etc..?

Cheers as usual

Not had a job offer yet unfortunately, but I have had a couple of interviews through jobs that I have applied for through Reed & Total Jobs.

    Good luck with your search.

I always try to apply directly to the employer by going through their own webpage/recruitment site etc. For some reason I don't trust applying via the 'middle man' eg Jobsite, I always imagine my application disappearing into thin air when I click submit!

That said, about 5 years ago I did get an interview after applying through Reed, but it wasn't quite what I was expecting. Best to go direct I think.

I've had jobs in the past through job boards, so they can be useful. I work in IT related areas and use jobserve.com, not so much jobsite anymore. I went for a course a while ago through job centre and the woman who ran it was surprised I actually got jobs/interviews through them.... I was puzzled... maybe they are better for certain fields. She also advised handing over references to agencies, which is a big no-no in the field I'm in, they just ring your bosses up for sales leads.

But I am finding now that in the recession more agencies use them to harvest CVs and there isn't always an immediate job (I think). However I've had call-backs from that at a later date as they put your CV in a database, then the sales people search that and give you a ring sometimes months later (when other roles come up).

It can be a bit disheartening as I reckon there are a lot of people going for each vacancy, when I look I try and get on there as early as possible before others apply... I can't get the timing right so if anyone else has tips on that I'd appreciate it as need to look again in a few weeks :(

As well as job boards I email everyone I know/contacts and use Linkedin.

    Hope your search goes well.

[EDIT] Sorry, should have said, I tend to go for contract jobs, I have had permanent interviews but less likely.
  • I found reed.co.uk quite useless. A lot of the jobs on there are duplicated or have expired (been filled) by the time you call about them. monster.co.uk is always a good one.

I joined fish4jobs plus a load of other ones when i was searching 2 years ago, ish, and I got a job thru fish4jobs within a week of my being on there after months of pap all from the other sites I joined. It was an agency job but I was there for 2 years (even got promoted!) and only reason I left was cos i found a better suited job for me. So I gotta say in my experience they may be a potch, and some so badly designed, but they do pay off in the end!

  • Yes, I was lucky enough to get a job via the Reed website although it seems I may be in the minority!

As other poster says, they do seem to duplicate a lot of their jobs and the same jobs are often advertised with different agencies on the same site with different details.

Most local papers have their own websites and jobs section. Does anybody know if jobs that are shown in the print version of the paper will automatically be shown on the online version?
  • :) Good Quastion. I have never thought about that
  • I have applied to some of the companys you mention and have received a reply and been asked for interview. You need to take 25 pounds for an enhanced disclosure, which you need to pay yourself.

I have got a number of jobs via Totaljobs and other direct websites, work in sales... a couple via agencys and 1 direct.

I have also used totaljobs, jobcentreplus website (waste of space) and local press to recurit.

had about 17 applications via total jobs, and about 200 views of my advert.

the local press had about 7 applications

the jobcentreplus joke of a new website 1.
